This isn't enough to change their rank, but you forgot the fact that the red lanterns seek not only vengeance but justice, as well. Justice through vengeance, making them anti-heroes. They come off as villains because they think they're retaliating against the green lanterns for the accidental annihilation of Atrocitis' planet by the GL created Martian Manhunters.
