This is only partly true. At the time BG3 was developed goblins were humanoids and creature of Maglubiyet.
It's a recent change that made them fay. This is part of an effort from the side of Hasbro to make the former "evil" species redeemable.
I still would have liked to see goblins as a playable species in BG3
