It's a tough call; if you make dying less punishable, then players could potentially abuse a strong map by running it repeatedly just shy of completion.
I think the high-risk, high-reward idea behind the current state of the Atlas is fine as-is. You can run a safe map, with a safe waystone, with safe towers... Or you can run a scary one with a better payout, but with the potential to lose a lot of effort. The choice, and the consequences of your choice, are yours.
I do like a tough map, though... And it really is painful to lose to the first rare because it does something sudden and unexpected. After a major failure like that, I'll just do some weaker maps for a while to build my confidence... Or maybe do a Trial of Sekhemas run to improve my reaction time, because nothing is more clearly punishing than dealing with Honor.
