*spoilers* the mall incident wasn't a test in anyway, no matter how well you did, you were meant to die. You were meant to get the data, then die to the virus as it activated in you and spread to the net watch agents. It's only by sheer accident that you had the chip in you that you survived, which it makes it clear he didn't know about. You were just a disposable guided missile to him.
