See AllClair Obscur: Expedition 33 Is What Happens When a Final Fantasy Story Doesn't Pull Its Punches
I think that comparing Final Fantasy to Expedition 33 does a disservice to both. I would also like to point out that using Final Fantasy 16 as an example of "bringing characters back" isn't as salient of a point as previous Final Fantasy titles. Namely, there are many characters in Final Fantasy 16 that get killed off during the first couple of hours of gameplay. While those deaths do not have the gravitas of killing off Gustave, the protagonist in Expedition 33, they are jarring nonetheless and set a tone for Final Fantasy 16 unmatched from previous entries, particularly the ending. To speak to the example provided of Joshua coming back in FF16, we the players don't know for sure that Joshua is dead. More to the point, his Dominant is the Phoenix, the actual embodiment of rebirth. While I would like to see more Final Fantasy titles take lessons from Expedition 33, both excel at telling stories in their own way.
