"Metroidvania" is a specific subgenre of Action-Adventure. They do tend to be in the "adventure side scrollers" but not all of those are Metroidvanias. For example: "Donkey Kong Country Returns" is a an action-adventure side scroller but it is not a Metroidvania. It sounds like you might be struggling with how sub-genre criteria works in general though.
