See AllSteam Machine Hardware Has Me Worried About the PS5’s Long-Term Future
Steam Deck’s “earth-shattering success”? It sold in the single digit millions. The Switch 2 outsold 3 years of Steam Deck sales in its launch month. The Steam Deck might end up not even outselling the PS Vita and Wii U.
This thing will be ultra niche, even more so than the Steam Deck. It won’t play the most popular live service games that are super popular on consoles (EAFC, CoD, Fortnite, GTA Online) because it’s Linux-based. It will be far more expensive than a console while having specs below the base PS5 and Series X, won’t support physical games, won’t be sold in retail stores and both Sony and Microsoft were planning to launch a next-gen console at the end of 2027. They might be pushed back a bit because of RAM prices but the Steam Machine is coming 6 years late to the party and will be outdated soon enough. Considering it has 8GB of VRAM one could argue it’s already outdated out of the box.
Like the Deck, it’ll just be another machine for YouTubers to talk non-stop about while no one in the real world has one.
