I mean even in the turn based rpg formula they could take bigger swings. Try doing things like: adding player choice which like Digimon survive could effect your monster's form, add romance options so if you and another trainer/tamer/ect you are romancing fight together you get synergy, city management, let the player fight with their creature adding classes and gear so you pick creatures that act to guard your weaknesses. Playing a glass cannon wizard? You want a tanky monster to take the hits for you. Playing a tanky fighter? You'll want a healer monster. Plenty of untapped potential in that well
