The logic of Goten and Trunks having more potential is flawed because SSJ was easier with the presence of S cells. Gohan didn't have those S cells so he gained super saiyan like vegeta and goku. Remember SSJ amps the power level that you'd have, so Goten and Trunks power levels are still low-ish even after multiplying with SSJ. That's why we don't even see them go SSJ3 individually.

Secondly, I think the ONLY reason Gohan has the higher potential is because the "human" side amps emotions higher. We all seen in most fiction that humans are seen as one of the most emotional species/race. So combining that with race that's supposed to have unlimited potential and unlock new levels using emotion levels that they inherently couldn't access easily, which they also used the female saiyans to show how easily they learned how to become SSJ, because women use emotions more than males, while one had to be taught how to control her form after starting it.

It's just shooting everyone in the foot to have Gohan have the pacifist personality, while holding such an interesting mystery within his character that doesn't really get explored because vegeta and goku are more interesting for trying to get stronger intentionally because of their saiyan race.
