See AllStar Trek: The Next Generation Was Banned From Using this TOS Character's Name
Honestly, I think it could go either way. On one hand, it might have brought some die-hard fans who didn't want to see anything other than a show with direct continuity into the fold more quickly, and on the other, it may have turned off some of those same die-hard who'd scoff at the notion that the new series was relying on the old series too much.
People are so weird when it comes to things like this. It doesn't matter if something is good in a show/movie or not. For years now, I've noticed that people will criticize a show/movie for no other reason than to try and make themselves look like an "expert" or "true" fan.
It wouldn't have mattered much either way if they'd have had more callbacks to TOS than they did. There's have been a select number of people who'd have mocked it for doing so. However, TNG would have done just as well, if not better than it did if it'd had more callbacks because the show was outstanding on its own merits. It didn't even require that TOS had even existed beforehand. Sure, that's what pulled in the largest number of viewers at the beginning, but like any great show, it would have drawn its viewership on its own merits even without TOS or the TOS movies. 🤘🖖✌
