Making a female protagonist just for the sake of doing so won't sell a game. There needs to be quality substance to the story and character development beyond the surface level DEI hired main cast.
No one will care if the female lead fits the narrative and the character develops with it as the game progresses. To the contrary, if she is a female trying to be like a alpha male (Lightning) she won't be received well and the game's sales will reflect it.
Luckily, Japan doesn't suffer as much from the left wing regressive DEI ideology as much as the Western developers do so there's that.
