The portal is easy to understand if you understand the basic "solo" "fireteam" "pinnacle" "crucible" definitions, the only difference is the score multiplier, which is also an impressive addition as it allows both hard-core and new players to level up, albeit different paces. Previously a new player would have to struggle to reach a light level high enough to do pinnacle content as it was significantly harder to find a fireteam when no one wants a low level around. The portal now allows you to complete what used to be difficult content, with perks that benefit you EXTREMELY, such as increased precision damage, or selected surge. Yes, it gives you lower level gear at C or B tier than A tier, but it's not meant to be easy to level up. Level is meant to show skill. And like most games a new player will be confused at first, it's no different to the UI changes for the portal.
