Magic has has scifi elements since almost it's inception. Some of the artifacts in Antiquities could easily be considered scifi adjacent. And we've had airship like the weatherlight with laser guns for decades. Not including Urza's whole thing in his fight against Phyrexia. It's not as much of a shock as many people keep insisting.
