Not all games "need" an open world - some games work better with tightly focused narratives.
Just because Skyrim allows you to ignore the main quest indefinitely doesn't mean it would sense for other storylines like those in the above titles.
A good story has pacing, and sometimes that means you need to focus on what the characters motivation (main quest) is at the expense of distractions (side quests).
