My cat doesn't stay behind. The main reason to leave the palico behind isn't necessarily to make the game harder though. It's actually to make it easier. When you play solo, the monster only focuses on you, which makes it a lot more predicatable. Weapons like lance in example can fully practice counters a lot easier this way
