Best Cel-Shaded JRPGs, Ranked
Not all of these are Cel-Shaded.
Cel-Shading is a method of shading that clamps the darkness of shadows to a few discrete values, often resulting in a very iconic banding -- as seen in "NEO: The World Ends With You" and "Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom".
Less softer cel-shading is seen in "Persona 5 Royal", where textures themselves use more gradients.
I see no clear shading in "Jeanne d'Arc" aside from maybe what appears to be the anime cutscenes.
"Dark Cloud 2" also doesn't seem to do shading aside from circular shadows beneath characters.
Cel-Shading has often been confused for "cartoonish art direction", the most prevalent example of which probably being "Borderlands," which is *not* Cel-Shaded.
A gentle criticism, starting an article that focuses on a specific quality or uses a specific vocabulary word, open with a discussion about that thing. A paragraph or two on *what cel-shading is* before talking about *the effects of using it* would have gone a long way for the reader and, for the writer, would likely have highlighted the confusion around cel-shading, resulting in an even better piece.
Cheers.
