See AllThe First Descendant: Best Controller Aiming Settings
My honest opinion is that any "Auto-Aim" or "Aim-Assist" mechanics and tweaks should be either:
1- Hard coded and give as the player an easy/medium/hard option OR
2- Keep the mechanic server side. Locked by whoever is hosting the IP.
I've been gaming since the early 80's. There have always been arguments about aim-bots, even way back when Doom came out in 93? As far as I am concerned if the game is PvP there should be no assistance offered Client side.
The Owners & or Company Hosting could then have the aim assist mechanics on a "Lock-Down" and tweak it globally as needed, based on player feedback. (This could be as simple as seeing the trends on your game's forums BUT it could be more complex... This would open up a new world of data collection via controller inputs... We already see Anti-Cheat programs doing this to ban people that achieve "clicks per minute")
By going with the latter, this would give the Devs an ability to include more game "stats" at the "Match Ended" screen. E.g., "# of deaths avoided by 1/2 Inch", "# of Kills missed by 1/2 Inch", "# of Aim-Assisted kills". (If it only kicks in from time to time.) It would also allow the Host to collect more data from "controller input trends in general" VS "controller input trends in specific Maps/Areas of Maps/Situations". And make their own game tweaks according to the most negative trends. (I have always tried to steer gamers towards better gameplay)
Well now. I seem to have said a lot more than I thought I was going to.
