Sticks are useful, but also incredibly common. Cutting down one tree can easily lead to a full stack of 100 sticks, plus some extra, raining down for you, and you only need to carve out the half a dozen logs at the bottom of the tree to knock down the whole thing. I literally have a double chest next to my furnace that is just a dumping ground for all of the extra sticks I've collected when gathering the logs I need for everything, because even using them to make tools and skewers doesn't make a dent in my overall supply.
I am hoping for an expansion in automation (such as being able to somehow mark for produced charcoal in a furnace to be slotted in as fuel if a stack of sticks runs out), but I think the stick -> charcoal pipeline is more time efficient than mining out coal in Minecraft at the moment.
