This list is incomplete. If you're going to include free ships then the Star Eagle should be included, also the Wanderwell you get from the kids stuff trait. Both ships are easily modified to become very effective ships. There is also the Kepler-R or -S depending on choices made during a quest from Walter Stroud. All 3 ships are free and relatively easy to acquire, but alas nothing is better than building your own ships from scratch. Also personal opinion but the star eagle is one of the best ships and easy to modify.
