See AllThe Next Battlefield Should Go Out of Its Way to Satisfy One Side of Its Community
I registered here just to respond to this article. I am BF player of 22 years, twitch streamer, youtuber, and BF content creator. Despite new or vocal calls for Battlefield to enter the "Reality", "Realism" or "Milsim" market - whatever you want to call it - It doesnt belong there. Ever. Battlefield is a combined arcade-style sandbox FPS with grounded themes based on simulated warfare. It stands on its own in that regard, and whatever flaws the series may or may not have as of late, not being realistic enough in its gameplay is not its critical failing. It will also not help the franchise combat the Call of Duty juggernaut. There are numerous other franchises out there doing the mil-sim realism thing. Some are terrible, others are more successful. None of them are outright popular or sustainable for long periods because it attracts a niche audience, and none of them ever look to combat CoD for any real share of players. People want to play those games? They are out there - Squad, Hell Let Loose, Six Days in Fallujah, even the newer Gray Zone Warfare. Let that be their focus, and let the Battlefield series do what it alone is best at. Also, with regard to the BF3 Reality mod, you should be aware that you are about 2 years too late on reporting about it. It launched soon after the BF3 modding framework called Venice Unleashed in late 2022, but it only ever had 1 server really running at capacity. It also dropped off like brick within a few months, because it wasnt complete, had major issues, and the interested niche playerbase had real alternatives in those fully developed games. It has almost always had no players since, and the only real exceptions to that is when they announce a short playtest update. Ill give them incredible props on such an achievement for doing that in BF3, but full on realism modes simply do not have the sustainability in Battlefield that you think they do.
