The sole reason to vault things is to create artificial scarcity i.e. 'It's coming out of the vault, better get it while you can'.

That said, with PC games there's always an element of maintenance required as all the software changes and breaks things so it's possible some of the older ones were getting too costly to maintain. Dick move on their part not letting fans know though.
