I'm only at level 143 but have been running a shotgun build since the beginning. As I was grinding to get legendary drops and mods but my best starter shotgun was a combat shotgun with increasingly damaging legendary and mod properties as I acquired (double barrels are too slow as basic). Managed to get the pepper shaker, crowd control, and now the cold shoulder. Pepper shaker is insane and don't remember where I got it but it has the Hunter effect and a few others that make it a go-to in certain situations. Been using the Cold Shoulder and by far my favorite, especially when dealing with bosses I had no idea so many animals are considered Cryptids... Dealing with a Blue Devil is now much easier due to the cryo effect that slows them down. Quad barrel and quick reload speeds make it feel as fast as the combat shotgun.
