Summary

  • Nintendo pushed for the release of Professor Layton and The New World of Steam on the Switch.
  • Fans eagerly await the release date while rumors and speculations surround the game.
  • Level 5 may bring back more Layton games to the Switch, potentially including collections from DS and 3DS entries.

Professor Layton and The New World of Steam was not originally in the plans, but Nintendo helped push for it. Professor Layton and The New World of Steam's surprise announcement on the Nintendo Switch was well-received ever since it was revealed in 2023. The puzzler franchise's only entry on the system was Layton's Mystery Journey in 2019, and even that was a re-release of the 3DS title that originally came out in 2017.

As fans await the official confirmation of Professor Layton and The New World of Steam's release date, many other speculations continue to surround the mysterious game. The eight-year absence of the franchise has had a lot of players talking about why the game took so long to return. A recent interview with Level 5's CEO reveals the answer to this big question.

A long-forgotten Professor Layton game gets recovered in incredible circumstances that might have involved some kind of fire.

During a Tokyo Game Show chat with Dragon Quest's Yuji Horii, Level 5 CEO Akihiro Hino shared that the team was originally content to leave the Layton series alone after it concluded years ago. However, it was said that several big names in the industry called for its return, including one Hino referred to as a certain Company N. Many fans believe that he was referring to Nintendo, which published all DS and 3DS Professor Layton games outside of Japan.

What Could This Mean For Future Professor Layton Games

While it isn't officially confirmed that it was Nintendo, the good that came out of this was that Level 5 decided to go ahead with Professor Layton and The New World of Steam after much prodding from industry giants. With Nintendo Switch's only experience being Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy, this would be a good way to reintroduce the franchise to modern gamers. Interestingly enough, a few fans are wondering if Level 5 should bring back Katrielle Layton in Professor Layton and The New World of Steam.

In addition, with the huge hype coming from Professor Layton and The New World of Steam, Nintendo and Level 5 have a big opportunity to bring the other Professor Layton games to the Switch. Many fans would be happy should the two companies decide to come up with collections of both the DS and 3DS entries. As with the recent release of the Castlevania Dominus Collection, the Switch has proven that it can handle games from the DS era, albeit with a few adjustments to cater to the difference in technology. Hopefully, Level 5 continues their work with the Professor Layton franchise and adds more entries.
