Summary

  • Eric Overmyer's role in translating Connelly's books for TV is pivotal to Bosch's success.
  • Fans must fight for a proper ending for Bosch: Legacy with over 35,000 signatures.
  • Overmyer has been overlooked for his contributions, and deserves recognition as a 'fearless leader' of the Bosch-verse.

The end of Bosch: Legacy was abrupt due to Amazon's sudden cancelation back in September 2024. It's an undignified end for one of Peak TV's greatest ever shows, but the fans are fighting to give Harry Bosch a proper ending with over 35,000 signatures on the Save Bosch: Legacy petition. Michael Connelly and Titus Welliver deserve huge credit for bringing Harry Bosch to life, but there's one man who never gets the credit he deserves: co-creator and showrunner, Eric Overmyer.

Eric Overmyer was responsible for translating Michael Connelly's iconic crime books into a television series, with three-dimensional characters, top-quality writing and proper serialized storytelling. The real Bosch fans know how important Overmyer is, and so do the cast and crew who worked with him. His contribution to the birth of Amazon's streaming service is significant, and it wouldn't be what it is today without him. Eric Overmyer is the real 'fearless leader' of the Bosch-verse, and if this truly is the end of Harry Bosch's solo stories, it's time to celebrate what he's achieved.

'Amazon Swept All Those People Out' Bosch: Legacy Contract Claim Is Very Revealing

Amazon allegedly launched Bosch: Legacy as a way to break contracts with long serving crew on the original series.

Eric Overmyer's Contribution To Bosch And Bosch: Legacy Is Huge And He Isn't Given The Credit He Truly Deserves

When Amazon bought the rights to Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch books, they hired legendary television writer and producer, Eric Overmyer, to oversee the project as co-creator and head showrunner. It turned out to be the greatest decision they ever made because the original Bosch series essentially put Amazon on the streaming map. There are arguably three truly 'fearless leaders' of the Bosch-verse: Michael Connelly, who wrote the books, Titus Welliver, who portrayed the iconic lead character, AND Eric Overmyer, who translated it for television. Connelly and Welliver are absolutely key to the success of the Bosch-verse, but without Eric Overmyer, the last ten years of high-quality drama wouldn't have happened. In an exclusive interview with The Best War Games, Gregory Scott Cummins raved about Overmyer:

The showrunner, Eric Overmyer, is incredible. He is like Shakespeare. I think Eric Overmyer's contribution was overlooked. He made this show. And I don't think it was ever publicly appreciated. We knew. Michael Connelly is basically God. He created this whole thing. But Eric Overmyer translated it for TV. And that is a skill. Keeping the plot lines together, keeping them moving, all the different plot lines interweaving. And then the character development of each character. It's such an art. He is a genius.

Overmyer doesn't do many interviews, and chooses to focus his attention on the craft of writing, which is probably why his contribution does get 'overlooked'. The work speaks for itself, and he's built a legacy that will last forever. As Harry Bosch says, 'legacy matters'. Overmyer began his career as a playwright in the 1970s, and that's when he first came into contact with a young actor called Troy Evans, who would go on to portray Barrel Johnson in Bosch and Bosch: Legacy. In an exclusive interview with The Best War Games, Evans stated:

When I first got to California, I went to this little theater in San Maria, and a college playwright came through to see a play I was in, and that was Eric Overmyer. I met him in the summer of 1976. And then 40 years later he calls me up, 'Troy, it's Eric, I'm working on this thing with Michael Connelly and I think there's something there for you.' Crate and Barrel are not prominent in the books, but Eric told Michael Connelly that these guys needed to be there.

Michael Connelly's books are brilliant, but they are very focused on Harry Bosch, and a television show needs to be about so much more than one character. Overmyer knew this, and that is why Crate and Barrel are so iconic; Jerry Edgar is a fully fleshed partner for Harry Bosch and the rest of the ensemble are so strong.

If Bosch: Legacy Does Come Back, Eric Overmyer Is The Key To Its Success

The Save Bosch: Legacy campaign is all about giving the creative team the chance to end the story properly. Eric Overmyer was there from the start, and Amazon should have given him the heads-up about the plans to end the show after the third season, similarly to how they did with the original Bosch series back in 2021. Amazon's executives don't have a clue about the creative side of the Hollywood industry after spending so much time in their deluded Silicon Valley bubble. Amazon clearly thought they knew better than Eric Overmyer about how Bosch: Legacy should end, and the huge fan backlash would suggest they didn't.

It might have been a wiser option for Amazon to let Eric Overmyer, Michael Connelly and Titus Welliver decide when Harry Bosch's solo stories were ready to end. Not to mention, Bosch: Legacy belongs to the fans now, and they'll decide when they've had enough. Unfortunately, the damage is done, and the sun has set on Harry Bosch's saga. However, there's a very good chance the noise created by the petition could lead to a continuation at some point in the future, and Overmyer should get the chance to complete his vision for the Bosch-verse. There is no Bosch: Legacy without Eric Overmyer and everybody knows that. Hold Fast!
