The newest entry in the Prince of Persia franchise was released a few weeks ago, and it seemingly had a successful launch. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown received glowing reviews, with score averages ranging between 86 and 88 on Metacritic, depending on the platform. However, it seems that the critical fanfare did not automatically convert into sales.
A recent report made by Insider Gaming indicated that Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown had underwhelming sales. According to the media outlet, the platformer managed to attract only around 300,000 players and gained an estimated revenue of $15 million. The information comes from unnamed Ubisoft employees, who also indicated that the company may have hindered its reputation with its player base, and this resentment could have been reflected in these poor numbers. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was greatly criticized when its first trailer was unveiled, but the overall sentiment about the game at least seemed to have shifted after its launch and the positive reviews. Unfortunately, it does not seem that this change greatly affected sales.
Low Sales May Not Bode Well For Prince of Persia's Future
After these seemingly disappointing sales, it’s unclear what the future of the Prince of Persia franchise will be. Before now, the last mainline title in the franchise was Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands in 2009, and Ubisoft seems reluctant to put out a new fully 3D game. Unfortunately, the low sales make it unlikely that The Lost Crown may get a sequel, despite being considered by some to be one of the best Prince of Persia games.
Overall, these do not seem to be great times for Ubisoft as a whole. According to Insider Gaming’s report, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was a success, with 1.9 million players and around $133 million in revenue, but it pales in comparison to the profitability of some previous Ubisoft games like Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and The Division. Also, the upcoming Skull and Bones cost over $200 million, and Ubisoft does not expect to make that money back. Fortunately, games like the next Assassin’s Creed and Star Wars Outlaws will be out in 2024 and may be more successful than these recent releases.
