Over 30 years after its debut, the original Power Rangers team is morphing back into action with a brand-new comic book in 2026. Since arriving in America in 1993 as a television adaptation of the Japanese Super Sentai series, Power Rangers has become a cultural phenomenon and one of the most popular toys on the market. Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, the franchise’s debut, proved to be a generation-defining show and a major source of nostalgia from the 1990s.

Even as the franchise has moved on with over 20 different seasons, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers remains arguably the most recognizable team of teenagers with attitude to grace television screens. Its cast of characters have made several returns across subsequent Power Rangers series, and its iconic theme song, built on the catchphrase “Go Go Power Rangers,” has been rearranged for various seasons of the show throughout the 2010s. The franchise has also been adapted into three different theatrical films, with Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers serving as the basis for two of those features.

It’ll Be Morphin’ Time for the Original Team With New Power Rangers Comic in 2026

As reported by ComicBook, the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers team will return in a new comic book set to release in May. The comic, titled Power Rangers #0, will be the work of longtime Power Rangers comic book publisher BOOM! Studios and will be released alongside publisher Penguin Random House’s first Comics Giveaway Day. The comic will tell multiple stories spanning several Power Rangers eras, with one story featuring the six stars that made up the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers in the 1990s.

This time around, the team of Jason, Zack, Billy, Trini, and Kimberly will not be the teenagers viewers got to know in the original television series. Instead, the comic will reimagine them as full-grown adults who reunite at the Command Center after several years have passed. The description of the comic also asks "Where's Tommy?" In reference to the original Green Power Ranger, who joined the team later in the first season of the show.

Power Rangers

The return of the classic Power Rangers team in the new comic will be an exciting proposition for longtime fans of the series. While a few of the original cast members did return for 2022’s Netflix special Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Once & Always, most of them were not able to return. A comic book reunion will be a great way to honor the characters, especially Trini, whose actor, Thuy Trang, passed away in 2001.

Power Rangers #0 will also be more than just a nostalgia play, as the decision to age the characters up makes the comic feel like a continuation of their story, instead of another monster-of-the-week plot that the series is typically known for. Bringing the original Rangers back as adults also allows the story to be more mature, instead of feeling like it needs to appeal to children in the same way as the television series. The potential absence of Tommy also adds an emotional edge that should differentiate it from the campiness the franchise has been known for, and raises the question of how the comic will honor his actor, Jason David Frank, who passed away in 2022.
