Power Rangers is an incredibly popular action adventure series, directly based on the Japanese Super Sentai series and usually following a group of five teenagers depicted in various colors on the chromatic spectrum. Since the very beginning, a sixth ranger, (or more,) has often found their way into each iteration.
Many seasons of Power Rangers often feature an antagonistic character under some spell or curse. Once the curse is lifted, those villains usually begin working with the Rangers. That said, not every sixth ranger in the franchise has been shown equal favor. Many series' sixth rangers fail to live up to expectations or don't mesh well with the original group, but some standout additions feel as though they were always meant to be there.
Power Rangers: 8 Strongest Purple Rangers, Ranked
There aren't too many Purple Power Rangers in the franchise but these are the strongest of the bunch.
10 Cosmic Fury's Orange Ranger, Fern, Is One of the Longest Serving Canon Orange Rangers
Fern's Addition Has Many Fans of the Color Orange Absolutely Elated
Cosmic Fury's Orange Ranger is particularly interesting for one reason; they're orange. Aside from being on what many consider to be the modern pinnacle of Power Ranger teams, she is also one of the first to don the color officially. Other Orange Rangers have been teased, but they have never made an appearance in the TV series before. She is also dating Green Cosmic Ranger Izzy Garcia, making them the first official LGBTQ+ couple in Power Rangers history.
Fern is a capable combatant and has access to all the same powers as her fellow Cosmic Fury Rangers with the addition of her Solono claw. She also has access to a Chamelon Zord, which she co-pilots, and her main Scorpion Zord. Fern, like the other Cosmic rangers, is based on Dinosaurs, although each of their designs seems slightly overdone.
9 Cam Watanabe's Green Samurai Ranger Feels Like a Reskin of the Original Green Ranger
Cam Only Gets His Powers After a Trip to the Past\
Cam Watanabe is what happens when the "guy behind the chair" steps into the front lines. After getting sent to the past on a crazy morphing mission, he returns to the future with the ability to become The Green Samurai Ranger. His design is visually distinct compared to his Ninja companions, and his moveset is reflective of his unique outfit. He might prefer to stay behind the chair, but he's more than capable of battling it out when necessary. Cam has all the ninja training of his fellow rangers, and twice the intellect.
10 Best Red Power Rangers, Ranked
The Red Rangers are usually the strongest and most capable members of every Power Rangers team, but that isn't always the case.
Cam's biggest downfall is his lack of real-world experience, which he quickly overcomes during his time as a Ranger. He isn't necessarily the Ninja Ranger's leader, but he helps them reach their full potential. Needless to say, without Cam, Power Rangers Ninja Storm would've ended significantly earlier. Cam is even a pivotal part of the ranger's later crossover with the Dino Thunder iteration.
8 Dino Charge's Gold Ranger Is Often Considered The Best of the Modern Sixth Rangers
Sir Ivan of Zander Has one of the most Interesting Backstories in Power Rangers History
The Modern Power Rangers are often chastised for being too different or too childish compared to previous iterations. Dino Charge's Gold Ranger proves that the series is capable of leaning towards its roots when it really matters. Not only does Sir Ivan of Zander have one of the most interesting backstories in Power Rangers history, he's an incredibly capable combatant. Sir Ivan is a real knight, with centuries of combat experience under his belt.
Dino Charge's Gold Ranger is also a member of the Legendary Dino Rangers, which includes every Ranger ever based on a dinosaur Motif. Sir Ivan might be one of the most impressive modern Rangers, but wasn't given nearly enough time to shine compared to several of his sixth-ranger predecessors. That said, his cool power and design more than make up for his relative lack of screen time.
7 Power Ranger Turbo's Phantom Ranger Remains the Most Mysterious Ranger in History
The Phantom Ranger's Identity Has Never Been Officially Confirmed
The Power Ranger Turbo Phantom Ranger is easily one of the most mysterious Power Rangers characters in the entire franchise. Although he had plans to be revealed as the original Blue Ranger, Billy, his true identity was never revealed. He comes to the aid of the Turbo Rangers several times throughout their season, but never reveals who's truly under the helmet. Since he never got an official reveal, his identity remains the largest mystery in the entire franchise.
The Phantom Ranger has some of the best invisibility in the entire franchise, and is incredibly difficult to spot. He is able to take out entire teams of Divatox's goons single-handedly. While his identity was never revealed, it makes perfect sense for it to be Billy wishing to remain discreet and keep his identity hidden. Sadly, the decision was never made official and the Turbo Ranger's identity remains in limbo.
6 Trent Fernandez-Mercer Is the Original White Ranger's White Ranger
Trent Even Gives an Aged Tommy Oliver a Run For His Money Several Times
Trent Ferndandez-Mercer is the original Sixth Ranger's Sixth Ranger. When Tommy Oliver steps out of retirement to help a group of new teens take the mantle, Mesagog puts Trent under his spell to mock Oliver. Trent provides the Dino Thunder team with a lot of trouble, but easily becomes their greatest ally after being released from his spell.
Trent's White Ranger also has the ability to camouflage and teleport himself, making him an incredibly formidable opponent. Mesagog eventually created a clone of the White Ranger, but it was defeated by Trent Himself. This interaction ultimately proves that Trent has continued to grow during his time as a Ranger and probably would've grown even more under Tommy Oliver's teaching.
5 Antonio Garcia's Gold Samurai Ranger Moves Incredibly Quickly
The Gold and Blue of his Costume Works Incredibly Well
Antonio Garcia's Gold Ranger might be one of the fastest rangers in history. He can control the element of light and is one of the series' most capable combatants. Aside from being incredibly skilled in tech, he also has the strange ability to speak to fish. This is why most of his Zords are aquatic related. Antonio might not have been the most traditional ranger, but that doesn't make him any less powerful.
10 Strongest Villains In Power Rangers History, Ranked
The Power Rangers have faced some fearsome foes over the course of the franchise, but these are by far the most formidable.
Like the other Samurai Rangers, Antonio has access to a variety of powerful forms and power-ups, making him one of the most capable Rangers in history. The Gold Samurai Ranger also figured out how to use his morpher completely on his own, making him one of the only self-made Rangers in the series' history. Sadly, not many fans saw it the same way.
4 Anubis Kruger's S.P.D Shadow Ranger Is One of the Most Popular "Mentor" Rangers
The Shadow Ranger Has an Incredibly Unique Design
Anubis Kruger might be one of the coolest rangers in the entire history of the Franchise. Instead of being based on a color, his designation is the Shadow Ranger, and his design reflects that title. Unfortunately, Kruger does not make use of actual Shadow-based attacks aside from his iconic Shadow Saber. Kruger is easily one of the most powerful "mentor" Rangers and isn't a force to be messed with on the battlefield.
After leading the Space Patrol Delta for several years, he is easily one of the most powerful combatants in the organization. His alien physiology also makes him stronger than most normal rangers. He has several responsibilities which keep him from active duty, but he will always arrive right on time if he is truly needed. Many fans' biggest complaints with the Shadow Ranger is that he wasn't given near enough time to shine.
3 Mystic Force's Wolf Warrior Ranger Is an Incredibly Powerful Warrior
He Serves as One of the Rangers' Minor Antagonists Throughout the Series
Mystic Force's Wolf Warrior spends the vast majority of the series as one of its greatest villains. He regularly keeps the Mystic Force Rangers at bay while doing the work of his alleged master, Octomus. Toward the end of the series, it was revealed that the Wolf Warrior was actually the Red Ranger's father and had been under Octomus' control the whole time. Once Nick manages to free his father, he becomes one of the Power Rangers' strongest allies.
When it comes to sword skills, Leanbow is relatively unmatched. He is an ancient knight capable of battling the entire five rangers to a near standstill. Once his sword is turned on his former master, it becomes apparent why Octomus' decided to turn the swordsman instead of defeat him. Thankfully, Leanbow is given the opportunity to redeem himself before he is forced to do anything too terrible.
2 Jason Lee Scott Gives Tommy a Taste of His Own Medicine As the Gold Zeo Ranger
Scott Returns to the Rangers Briefly After His Mighty Morphin' Retirement
One of the most interesting moments in Power Rangers history was when Jason Lee Scott returned as the Zeo Gold Ranger. Scott serves as the first Gold Ranger in history and mirrors Oliver's original entry to the series. However, Scott never does anything evil during his time as the Gold Ranger. His design is also the coolest of the Zeo designs, by far.
9 Strongest White Rangers In Power Rangers
These are the strongest characters ever to earn the title of White Ranger, granting them powerful abilities and making them formidable Power Rangers.
Since he is the original Red Ranger, Scott is obviously a capable combatant. Yet, he is given several special abilities due to his status as the Gold Zeo Ranger. Jason might not be the original Gold Zeo Ranger, but he is certainly the most iconic in the role. Many modern fans usually don't even remember that the role belonged to anyone else.
1 The Original Green Ranger Remains the Most Powerful Sixth Ranger
Tommy Oliver Started the Trend of Having a Sixth Ranger
Tommy Oliver's first appearance as the Green Ranger is nothing short of iconic. He might start the series as a villain, but he quickly becomes one of the best Rangers in the franchise's history. In fact, many fans today consider him the quintessential Power Ranger. He is the first sixth ranger, and the person to establish the sixth-ranger trend in the first place. Oliver served as the first real shakeup in Power Rangers history and has continued to serve the franchise well since.
Oliver is easily the longest serving ranger in the series' history, but it all began as his tenure as the Green Ranger. None of Oliver's other Ranger appearances would come close to as popular and whenever Oliver would return in later, more modern, seasons of the show, it was typically as the Green Ranger. That said, he has worn many impressive titles during his incredible time as a Power Ranger.
