The Pokemon Trading Card Game has revealed six cards from the Mega Evolution set, along with its September 26 release date. The current set of the Pokemon Trading Card Game is Black Bolt and White Flare.

The Mega Evolution mechanic was first introduced in the Pokemon X & Y games, giving certain Pokemon a powerful, but temporary, evolution in battles. This was first implemented into the Trading Card Game with the XY set in 2014. However, the game moved away from Mega Evolutions over 10 years ago, shifting the mechanics to match the current generation of Pokemon games at the time. Currently, there is a focus on Prismatic Evolutions; however, the Pokémon Trading Card Game will soon be shifting away from this.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Reveals Black Bolt and White Flare Sets

Following several leaks, Pokemon Trading Card Game officially announces Black Bolt and White Flare, its fourth expansion for 2025.

During the Pokemon Presents on July 22, 2025, fans were given their first look at the upcoming Mega Evolution expansion, showing off six full-art cards that will feature in the forthcoming set. While most of them are EX cards of Pokemon that are Mega Evolved, it also showed that every member of the Bulbasaur family will have a full art card as well, with Mega Venusaur being the only EX of the three. This lines up with a recent announcement from The Pokemon Company, saying that the Pokemon Trading Card Game would be bringing back the mechanic.

On top of showing off some cards from the new set, the presentation also revealed that Mega Evolution will be released on September 26, 2025. This will put the expansion shortly before the Pokemon Legends: Z-A game, releasing on October 16, 2025, and is likely the main reason for the return of Mega Evolutions. Because of this, the Pokemon Trading Card Game set will likely feature many of the returning Mega Evolutions in the game. However, players may have to wait for the new evolutions to come in future sets, such as the newly revealed Mega Dragonite for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, which was announced at the same time as the Mega Evolution release date.

There were plenty of other announcements during this Pokémon Presents, such as a new Mystery Code for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, giving fans plenty to be excited about, no matter what form of the series they're enjoying. As for the Trading Card Game specifically, players could look forward to seeing more Mega Evolutions in their pulls, until the card game shifts to match whatever the 10th generation of Pokemon has in store.
