Pokemon TCG Pocket has become a hit with fans of the beloved monster-capturing franchise, and it looks to be keeping its momentum going. The game's next move is to introduce the new Space-Time Smackdown card expansion set, giving its players more to look forward to and collect. Interestingly, this new set will be focused on Pokemon from the 4th generation. As good as that may sound, it can make one wonder why the expansion would do so when considering the many desirable cards that have yet to be added.

The Space-Time Smackdown expansion for Pokemon TCG Pocket is expected to be released on January 29. While it will contain plenty of new cards, the focus on 4th generation of Pokemon raises some concerns. Bringing in monsters from the Sinnoh region is a welcome boon to the game's card-collecting and battling aspects, but what about those from Kanto and Johto? The 2nd and 3rd generations of Pokemon contain many popular monsters that fans of the franchise would love to see, which makes the decision to focus on Gen 4 a confusing one, to say the least.

Why Pokemon’s Next Expansion Shouldn’t Have Focused On Gen 4 Monsters

The reveal trailer of the Space-Time Smackdown expansion may be great for fans of the 4th generation of Pokemon, but its contents can still be seen as questionable considering what has yet to be added to the game. It possibly should not have placed so much emphasis on the Sinnoh region, since there are still things that have yet to be added such as:

  • Iconic monsters from the 2nd and 3rd generations such as Blaziken, Suicune, and Salamence.
  • Popular trainers, gym leaders, and champions who would make great support cards such as Steven, Lance, Wallace, and Flannery.
  • Items that helped define the 2nd and 3rd generations of Pokemon such as the PokeNav, Leftovers, and Choice Bands.

With the 4th generation being the main focus for the upcoming set, one can hope to expect that future expansions of Pokemon TCG Pocket will look to add more things from Hoenn and Johto. While the decision to jump ahead of those two to put more emphasis on Sinnoh will likely have some fans scratching their heads, there's no doubt that there will be many who will still appreciate the content.

How the Space-Time Smackdown Expansion Can Make It Up to Fans of Pokemon Gens 2 and 3

One of the best ways of spending Pokemon TCG Pocket's Poke Gold is by obtaining as many of the latest cards as soon as possible, and that's likely what many will be doing as soon as the Space-Time Smackdown expansion is released. Fans of the Sinnoh region may be overjoyed at what they could get, but the new set shouldn't exclusively focus on the 4th generation. The upcoming set should also contain at least several cards that represent the Johto and Hoenn regions, and all that has to be done to do that is to add the most memorable features from both. Whether it's an extremely popular trainer, monster, or an item, this can somewhat make up for the next expansion's decision to skip the 3rd and 2nd generations of Pokemon.

While one of the things people expected from Pokemon TCG Pocket in 2025 is an expansion that focuses on the 4th generation of Pokemon, perhaps they didn't expect it to come so soon. The decision can be seen as something that should have been released much later in the year, considering that there isn't much content from the Johto and Hoenn regions yet. That said, it can't be argued that the new set will still introduce plenty of content for Pokemon TCG Pocket fans to sink their teeth into.
