The Pokemon Trading Card Game will soon feature Mega Attack Rarity cards, inspired by the original Mega Pokemon EX cards introduced in 2014 with the XY expansion. This won't be the first new rarity added to the game this year, but for many, it's the most nostalgic addition to the Pokemon Trading Card Game in years.
In July 2025, Pokemon TCG's Black Bolt and White Flare expansion introduced the Black and White Rarity. Also known as BWR, this category contains monochrome cards of popular monsters, such as Reshiram EX and Zekrom EX. Now, the game is unveiling another new rarity tier, one that's likely to appeal to veteran fans.

The secret rare cards from the upcoming Pokemon TCG set have been revealed, showcasing impressive artwork that fans will soon be able to collect.
Pokemon Trading Card Game Gets Mega Attack Rarity Cards
Announced during the 2025 World Championships, Pokemon TCG's latest rarity is called Mega Attack (MAR). Cards in this class feature the attack title spelled out in the illustration, either in Japanese or English. Specifically, the English version will show the attack name in katakana, while the Japanese and Korean versions will use the English spelling. So far, three MAR cards have been revealed: Mega Charizard X EX, Mega Gardevoir EX, and Mega Lucario EX.
Pokemon TCG had previously confirmed Mega-evolved characters, and fans have been anticipating September 26, the release date of the first expansion to feature them. However, this is the first time The Pokemon Company has showcased the new Mega Attack Rarity cards, which is exciting for many fans. The company has also revealed a first look at the upcoming Mega Dragonite card, inspired by the creature's latest design in Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
Fans hoping to pull the new MAR cards will need to wait until Pokemon TCG's Mega Evolution expansion launches on September 26. For those who can't wait, September 13 will bring celebratory prerelease tournaments hosted by Play! Pokemon. The events will give fans a chance to play with the upcoming Mega-evolved Pokemon ahead of the official release.
Fall will also be an eventful season for fans of digital pocket monster cards, as Mega Evolutions are set to arrive in Pokemon TCG Pocket as well. They're also coming to Pokemon Champions and will be eligible for upcoming tournaments in the near future. With these developments and the introduction of the Mega Attack Rarity in Pokemon TCG, it's clear that The Pokemon Company is betting heavily on Mega Evolutions and will likely push to make them a staple gimmick across most formats, including VGC and TCG competitions.
