Summary

  • Pokemon Gen 7 had numerous cut regional forms and new Pokemon, including several scrapped Alolan forms.
  • Mimikyu version-exclusive forms were planned for Pokemon Sun and Moon, but never came to light, much like two fossil Pokemon.
  • An unreleased Ultra Beast named Mozzura was meant to appear in the 20th Pokemon movie.

The Pokemon franchise has always seen leaks and datamines floating around the internet or even in paper form back when CoroCoro was sharing Pokemon news, but last month saw the single biggest leak in the series' history due to a hacker attack on Game Freak. Every generation of Pokemon games appeared in the leaked documents, though not every game had meaningful revelations. Pokemon Sun and Moon and Gen 7 as a whole appeared a lot in the so-called Teraleak, revealing all kinds of ins and outs of the games - from Mimikyu's true form to the various cut Pokemon and forms that Gen 7 was originally planned to include.

Pokemon's regional forms were first added in Gen 7. They became immensely popular since, in part thanks to the focus on Kantonian critters, and in part due to this concept breathing new life in several evolutionary lines. Although Pokemon Sun and Moon introduced a whopping total of 18 regional forms to the series, more were originally planned or at least considered by Game Freak, and that is not even limited to just regional forms. At least three all-new Pokemon were conceived for Gen 7 but were later scrapped, probably never to return.

Why Pokemon Gen 7's Cut Regional Forms Should Return

Pokemon Sun and Moon were supposed to have at least five more Alolan regional forms, or these were at least considered before being cut for whatever reason. These are the following:

  • Electric/Rock - Rhyhorn
  • Water/Fairy - Seel
  • Water/Fairy - Dewgong
  • Bug/Fairy - Scyther
  • Fighting - Snorlax

Considering that both Rhyhorn and Scyther have evolutions and Snorlax has a pre-evolution, it seems plausible that if these regional forms were greenlit, fans would have had a few more. These include Rhydon, Rhyperior, Scizor, and Munchlax.

The entire Rhydon line could have been Electric/Rock in terms of type combinations, but maybe this was cut in favor of the Geodude line, whose Alolan forms were all Electric/Rock as well. The leaked cut form of Scyther could have given fans yet another Steel/Fairy Pokemon, one of the best type combinations in Pokemon games, with Scizor presumably losing its Bug type in favor of Steel. A Fighting-type Snorlax, and possibly Munchlax, would have also been interesting to see. Seel and Dewgong were probably the least likely to feature in Gen 7, as they would have had the same type as Primarina, and possibly even a similar design, so it makes sense why they were cut.

Mimikyu's Cut Version-Exclusive Forms Explained

On top of these cut regional forms, Pokemon Sun and Moon were planned to have two version-exclusive forms of Mimikyu dressed as other Pokemon, although there is no trace within the Teraleak as to what these forms might have been based on. Given that they were planned to be version-exclusive, it would have made sense to base them on Gen 7 critters that could only be found in each game.

Pokemon's Cut Alola Fossils Explained

The Alola region was also initially considered as a potential home for two new fossil Pokemon, which would have been version-exclusive. One was supposed to be Rock/Water, and the other a Rock-type Pokemon with some secondary type that was yet to be decided. Given that these cut Gen 7 Pokemon were not even fully conceptualized, it's likely they will never see the light of day.

Pokemon Gen 7's Cut Movie Ultra Beast Explained

Finally, Pokemon Sun and Moon - or possibly Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon - were supposed to have an additional Ultra Beast that was never released. Not much is known about this Pokemon, other than the fact that it was supposedly called "Mozzura" and it was meant to appear in the 20th Pokemon movie.

This Ultra Beast was reportedly bipedal with wings, as seen in this leak.
