Summary

  • Many Pokemon have foul stenches due to their toxic sludge bodies, gas emissions, or trash-eating tendencies.
  • Trainers likely need to cover their noses when they're around Gloom, Grimer, Koffing, and Stunky.
  • Mudbray stands out for regurgitating mud, and Grimmsnarl for exuding an unpleasant smell with its hair-covered body.

The world of Pokemon sure is wonderful, as it’s filled to the brim with fantastical creatures that possess all sorts of fascinating designs, attributes, and abilities. Who wouldn’t want to live there and have one of them as their companion? However, it’s also important to point out that not every Pokemon is pleasant to be around, because many of them are infamous for emitting foul stenches.

Jokemon: The Silliest Looking Pokemon In The Franchise, Ranked

There's been plenty of questionable Pokemon designs over the years, but some of them are just downright silly.

The bodies of some of these creatures are made up of toxic sludge and poisonous gases, and/or they rely on emitting disgusting substances to survive (similarly to many real-world animals). Truth be told, a lot of Pokemon probably smell absolutely terrible, and the following most likely incite their trainers to cover their noses at all times.

Gloom

A Cute Flower Pokemon With An Unfortunate Odor

  • Introduced in: Generation One
  • Types: Grass/Poison
  • Pokedex Number: 044

Gloom is a cute and small Pokemon with a blooming flower on its head, so it may look relatively innocent at first. But, similarly to the real-life Rafflesia that inspired its creation, said flower constantly emits a foul stench that drives off predators and opponents.

Many of Gloom’s Pokedex entries say that it smells repulsive, to the point that it’s almost impossible to get close to it, and that the stench can reach people who are over a mile away from it. Although it seems that some people (1 out of 1000, to be specific) actually enjoy Gloom’s infamous smell. Its evolution, Vileplume, doesn’t stink that much, as it prefers to scatter allergenic pollen instead.

Grimer & Muk

They’re Literally Made Of Toxic Sludge

  • Introduced in: Generation One
  • Type: Poison
  • Pokedex Numbers: 088 and 089

The very first generation was full of dangerous Poison-type Pokemon, with two of the most notorious being Grimer and its evolution, Muk. Not only are their bodies made up of toxic sludge, but they also search for and eat that same poisonous substance to survive.

In Pokemon Yellow, Grimer’s Pokedex entry states that its stench is so putrid that weeds won’t grow around it, while Muk’s entry in the same game reveals that its smell is so awful that it can cause people to faint. Curiously enough, this only applies to their Kantonian forms, as Alolan Grimer and Alolan Muk contain their toxins inside their bodies and, as a result, they don’t actually smell bad at all.

Koffing & Weezing

They Are Constantly Emitting Poisonous Gases

  • Introduced in: Generation One
  • Type: Poison
  • Pokedex Numbers: 109 and 110

But Grimer and Muk are not the only foul-smelling Poison-type Pokemon introduced in the first generation, because trainers exploring the Kanto region can also encounter Koffing and Weezing. These two are categorized as the Poison Gas Pokemon, which means that their bodies are constantly emitting poisonous gases that are deadly to their opponents.

Koffing’s Pokedex entry in Pokemon Gold states that its poisonous gases cause constant sniffles, coughs, and teary eyes, meaning that being around it must be really unpleasant. But its evolution is even worse, because Weezing’s Pokemon Ruby entry reveals that it feeds on the gases given off by rotten kitchen garbage, and that it usually makes itself at home in unkempt houses just to eat people’s trash. Galarian Weezing is the complete opposite, however, seeing that it consumes toxic gases and expels clean air.

Stunky & Skuntank

Like Real-Life Skunks, But Even Worse

  • Introduced in: Generation Four
  • Types: Poison/Dark
  • Pokedex Numbers: 434 and 435

As pretty much anybody living in North America can confirm, skunks are some of the stinkiest real-life animals, since they’re infamous for spraying people with a disgusting liquid whenever they feel like they’re in danger. Stunky and Skuntank are two Pokemon that are based on the skunk, and they most likely smell just as bad as it does, maybe even worse.

35 Worst-Designed Pokemon Of All Time

Pokemon designs can be pretty hit or miss regardless of which generation you're looking at, but these Pokemon's designs are flat-out duds.

1

Stunky’s Pokemon Diamond Pokedex entry says that, just like the animal it’s based on, it can shoot a noxious fluid from its rear with a stench that can linger for over twenty-four hours, and its Pokemon Platinum entry confirms that it spreads over a mile's radius. Skuntank also has this same ability, but since it shoots the liquid from the tip of its cannon-like tail, it can be a lot more precise and, thus, deadlier than its pre-evolution.

Trubbish & Garbodor

Two Living Garbage Bags

  • Introduced in: Generation Five
  • Type: Poison
  • Pokedex Numbers: 568 and 569

Generation Five was a soft reboot that introduced many new Pokemon that are supposed to be reimaginings of iconic creatures from the first generation. In the case of Grimer and Muk, their Generation Five counterparts are Trubbish and Garbodor, who are infamous for being two sentient garbage bags that eat trash.

The idea of a monster that’s made up of people’s trash already sounds disgusting from the get-go, but the Pokedex confirms that their stench is as foul as one would expect. Trubbish’s Pokemon Black entry warns that inhaling the gases it emits will put people to sleep for over a week. But Garbodor is even more dangerous in comparison, because it uses the toxic gases and toxic liquids in its body to finish off its opponents, as stated by its Pokemon Black entry.

Mudbray

The Idea Of Mud That Never Gets Dry Sounds Awful

  • Introduced in: Generation Seven
  • Type: Ground
  • Pokedex Number: 749

But Poison-type Pokemon are not the only ones who can smell bad, seeing as there are plenty of Pokemon with other types that can stink heavily as well. One notorious example is Mudbray, who may seem innocent at first, seeing as it’s just a small donkey, but it hides a secret that probably makes it unpleasant for its trainer to be around it.

As hinted at by its name, Mudbray enjoys covering itself in mud. That doesn’t sound bad: after all, many real-life animals cover themselves in mud, but it later dries out and/or falls off. But Mudbray is much different, because its Pokemon Scarlet entry reveals that it eats mud, regurgitates it, and covers itself with it. This already sounds awful, but to make things even worse, this mud allegedly never dries out, no matter how long it’s exposed to the sun.

Grimmsnarl

A Giant Monster Covered In Dirty Hair

  • Introduced in: Generation Eight
  • Type: Dark/Fairy
  • Pokedex Number: 861

A lot of Pokemon's bodies are covered head-to-toe in hair, which doesn’t sound like a big deal at first. But Grimmsnarl is completely different because not only is it covered by hair, but also because said hair acts as both its muscle fibers and its tentacles, meaning that it is constantly exposed to external factors.

The 19 Best Pokemon To Use As Tanks

Some Pokemon are much more defensive than others. Here's a look at a handful that make great tanks.

1

Wet and/or dirty animal fur smells horrendous in the real world, so Grimmsnarl, a troll-like Pokemon who lives in forests and doesn’t care about its hygiene, must constantly emit a foul stench as well. After all, its Pokemon Violet Pokedex entry states that it never gives up on its misdeeds and pranks, so it most likely enjoys smelling awful. Of course, Generation Eight also introduced Hatterene, who is also covered entirely by hair, but it’s an elegant Fairy-type Pokemon, so it most likely makes an effort to keep its coat clean and tidy.

Revavroom

A Sentient Car Engine That Leaves A Deadly Trail Of Gases Behind

  • Introduced in: Generation Nine
  • Type: Steel/Poison
  • Pokedex Number: 966

Even the most recent Pokemon generation has introduced a Poison-type Pokemon that is infamous for emitting atrocious smells and harming its surroundings, and it’s named Revavroom. This is a living car engine that can travel at high speeds, but it’s worth pointing out that it has an exhaust pipe in its body, which means that it emits gases from it, just like real cars.

In Pokemon Scarlet, Revavroom’s Pokedex entry states that it creates poisonous gas from the minerals in the rocks it consumes and that it detonates the gas in its cylinders to generate energy. On top of that, its Pokemon Violet entry confirms that it sprays toxic fluids as it runs around. Revavroom basically smells like a rusty and unkempt car engine, and those who are familiar with that specific stench can imagine how putrid this Pokemon must be.
