Pokemon announced two new games that are coming to the Switch at the end of the year, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, during the Pokemon Presents that took place on February 27. As some fans have analyzed the trailer for the upcoming titles, it seems that a gameplay gimmick may have been discovered.
It is quite common for mainline Pokemon games to introduce a new gameplay gimmick, making each generation stand out. From the Mega Evolutions in Pokemon X and Y to Pokemon Sword and Shield's Dynamax, unique gameplay mechanics have become one of the most interesting aspects of the series over the years.
In the reveal trailer for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, fans noticed an interesting location that may hold the answer to what these games' gimmick will be. In a town, there is a rainbow Poke Ball surrounded by a circle that shows the symbol for each type of Pokemon. This has caused some fans to theorize that the new gameplay gimmick will involve switching each move between different types. For example, perhaps a Grass-type move, such as Razor Leaf, can become an Electric-type move, which would cause players to think of many different strategies that they couldn't have performed in previous installments.
This theory is strengthened by Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's starters, Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly, which many fans compared to previous starters of different types when they were revealed. Fuecoco is a Fire-type crocodile, reminding many fans of Totodile, a Water-type crocodile that was one of the starters in Pokemon Gold and Silver. Similarly, Sprigatito's design has a lot in common with Pokemon Sun and Moon's Fire-starter, Litten, as they are both cats. As the starters of each generation are usually very different, this supports the idea that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's gameplay gimmick will be focused on the different types of Pokemon.
The announcement of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet took many fans by surprise, as they believed that Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which came out on January 28, would be the only major game in the franchise to release this year. As they wait throughout the months leading up to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, they can anticipate the new features that the games will include.
Even if this theory isn't what the gameplay gimmick will turn out to be, fans can have fun coming up with new ideas for what they'd like to see in the upcoming titles. Regardless of what the gimmick is, Pokemon fans have a lot to look forward to as Game Freak reveals more throughout the year.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will release later in 2022 on Nintendo Switch.
