Pokemon Scarlet and Violet don't just add brand-new Pokemon to the mix; they also include a few new evolutions and forms for existing Pokemon. One such example is Bisharp's new evolution: Kingambit. While most Pokemon evolve simply through leveling up, some have more specific Pokemon evolution requirements. The requirement to evolve Bisharp into Kingambit in Scarlet/Violet is by far one of the most unique to date.
Updated on September 19, 2024 by Renri Seong: Dark/Steel-type Bisharp gained an evolution in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, and it's arguably one of the more unique evolution methods. Kingambit is a Gen 9 Dark/Steel-type Pokemon with incredible base Attack and Defense. Whether you take the time to evolve Bisharp into the Big Blade Pokemon or not, you'll need to catch both of these Pokemon and its pre-evolved form, Pawniard, to complete the Paldean Pokedex. With the Teal Mask and Indigo Disk DLC fully accessible, you'll need the Dark/Steel-type family to complete the Kitakami Dex as well. The following guide has been revamped to include information on where to catch and evolve Bisharp in Paldea and Kitakami (Teal Mask). It also includes information regarding Kingambit and its stats/abilities.
Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: How to Get Dragalge
Dragalge is a version exclusive Pokemon in Gen 9's Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, so here's how you can obtain one in both games.
Where to Find Bisharp
Paldea & Kitakami
In Paldea, Bisharp can be found in North Province (Area Two), in the forest near Fury Falls and the Caph Squad Base. The Bisharp in this area are level 52. Should you go to Kitakami instead, you'll find Bisharp in the Timeless Woods. While you can visit the Timeless Woods right after starting your Treasure Hunt, it's generally not recommended. Pokemon in Timeless Woods before "The Way Home" main quest are around level 55. After you see the end credits and start the postgame, their level is set to 70.
Another way to get Bisharp is to look for them in Tera Raids. However, they only appear in 4-star Tera Raids, which unlock after you've earned seven gym badges.
How to Evolve Pawniard into Bisharp
Another way to get Bisharp is to evolve Pawniard, and unlike Bisharp, Pawniard can be found in lower-level areas. If you want to catch a wild Pawniard, you can search the following areas:
- South Province (Area Five)
- East Province (Area Three)
- North Province (Area Two)
They can also be caught in Kitakami/Teal Mask DLC:
- Oni Mountain
- Wistful Fields
- Fellhorn Gorge
- Kitakami Wilds
- Timeless Woods
The Pawniward in South Province (Area Five) and East Province (Area Three) will be around level 22 and level 28 respectively. Those in Kitakami (excluding Timeless Woods) will have their level set to 28-30 before "The Way Home." In the postgame, their levels are scaled to 70, just like every other Pokemon in Kitakami.
Once you have Pawniard, you'll need to raise its level to 52 to evolve it into Bisharp. You can do this by having it Auto Battle or feeding it Exp Candy L. If you catch Pawniard in Timeless Woods or North Province (Area Two), you won't need to level it up as much. However, considering you can also catch Bisharp in these two areas, it's better to forgo catching Pawniard and just get Bisharp to save you the trouble.

How to Evolve Bisharp into Kingambit
How to Find Bisharp with Leader's Crest
To evolve Bisharp into Kingambit, Bisharp must defeat three wild Bisharp that are holding a Leader's Crest. The way to determine if a wild Bisharp has a Leader's Crest is to battle Bisharps that are surrounded by Pawniards. You'll find these in North Province (Area Two) near the Caph Squad Base. Once your Bisharp has defeated three Bisharp that have the Leader's Crest, it will evolve into Kingambit.
Your Bisharp does not need to be holding a Leader's Crest to evolve.
Bisharp's typing is Dark/Steel-type, but fortunately, you can teach your Bisharp a Fighting-type move to potentially 1HKO its opponents. Thanks to its specific dual-typing, Bisharp has a 4x weakness to Fighting-type moves. Take advantage of this to speed up the evolution process. Bisharp can learn any of the following Fighting-type moves via TM:
- Low Kick (TM012)
- Low Sweep (TM039)
- Brick Break (TM058)
- Reversal (TM134)
- Focus Blast (TM158)
Since Bisharp has higher Attack than Special Attack, you may want to go with Low Kick, Low Sweep, or Brick Break instead of Focus Blast. You can use Reversal, but Reversal's damage is calculated by how much HP Bisharp has left. The lower its HP, the more damage Reversal will inflict.
If your Bisharp is struggling to weaken the opponent, then use another Pokemon. Bisharp only needs to land the final blow to the opposing Bisharp in order for it to count.
Finally, another way to get Kingambit is to trade for it, or battle one in 5-star or 6-star Tera Raids. 5-star Tera Raids unlock after "The Way Home," but 6-star Tera Raids require a bit more work. You'll need to win the Academy Ace Tournament in the postgame, then you'll need to fight in some Tera Raids for Jacq. When he contacts you about black crystals appearing around Paldea, you can start tackling the 6-star Raids.

Is Kingambit Good?
Kingambit Stats, Ability, and More
There are pros and cons to Kingambit just as there are with any other Pokemon. One thing to note is that Kingambit is slower than its pre-evolved form (Bisharp). Since Speed can be an important factor in battle, this is something you want to consider before opening a slot for Kingambit.
As of Gen 9/Scarlet & Violet, Bisharp can now make use of the Eviolite item. This is an item that applies a 50% increase to the Defense and Special Defense of a Pokemon that can still evolve. A Bisharp holding Eviolite may be more fitting for the team than Kingambit.
However, Kingambit has a unique Ability and a signature move. Here's what you'll want to know:
|
HP: |
100 |
|---|---|
|
Attack: |
135 |
|
Special Attack: |
60 |
|
Defense: |
120 |
|
Special Defense: |
85 |
|
Speed: |
50 |
|
Total: |
550 |
|
Super-effective against: |
Psychic, Ghost, Fairy, Rock, Ice |
|---|---|
|
Weaknesses: |
Fighting (4x), Fire, Ground |
|
Resistances: |
Grass, Rock, Flying, Ghost, Dark, Dragon, Steel, Normal |
|
Immunities: |
Psychic, Poison |
|
Defiant: |
Sharply raises the user's Attack stat when any stat is lowered. |
|---|---|
|
Supreme Overlord: |
Attack and Special Attack stats are slightly boosted (10%) for every Pokemon in the party that has already been defeated. |
|
Pressure (Hidden): |
Doubles the PP usage of the opposing Pokemon. |
Kingambit works best with its Supreme Overlord Ability. If you want to make full use of its stat growth, then you'll want an Adamant (+Attk, -Sp.Attk) or Jolly (+Spd, -Sp.Attk) Nature. Because of its Ability, Kingambit should be the last Pokemon you use in battle.
Recommended Moves
- Kingambit should have its Kowtow Cleave signature move. This is a Dark-type move with a power of 85. It also never misses, just like the Flying-type Aerial Ace.
- Swords Dance can give it some more Attack power if necessary. Using this will raise Kingambit's Attack stat by two stages.
- If you're worried about Fighting-types, then Kingambit can have some coverage with Aerial Ace or Zen Headbutt. Unlike Aerial Ace, Zen Headbutt is a Psychic-type move that sometimes causes the opponent to flinch. On the downside, it has an accuracy of 90%. While not bad, it still has more of a chance of missing whereas Aerial Ace will always hit its target in most circumstances.
- The last move could be another Dark-type attack such as Night Slash. In general, you'll want to avoid giving Kingambit special moves since its Special Attack stat is relatively poor.
