With this being the first weekend of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, players are already finding the best strategies to get some of the most powerful Pokemon fast and defeat tough Alphas or trainers. Others are taking it slow to find all the Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Wild Zones and complete Mable's Research, and there is no right or wrong way to do this. I like to do a mix of both and take some time to talk to the various NPCs, which led me to discover some niche facts about the game and its critters, with the most disturbing yet being something that Gen 7's Pokedex only hinted at.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A creates new Pokedex entries for some critters, though many others are recycled from older versions, and those of the Mega Evolutions added in this game are entirely new. While I do enjoy reading Pokedex entries for the Pokemon I care about the most, some interesting facts are not found within the Pokedex itself or through the game's Pokemon Professor, but rather by talking to random NPCs. This is exactly what I did, and I found out something quite disturbing: Vanillish, the ice cream Pokemon, actually has internal organs. Yes, you read that right - an ice cream with organs. Organ ice cream. However you want to put it, it's gross at best, and nightmare fuel at worst.
The NPC says that they are part of the Pokedex Research Society and believe that Vanillish uses its internal organs to make chilled air. This makes sense when I think about it, as Pokemon must have organs beyond brains. However, since they are often cutesy creatures with smiling faces and bizarre looks, this is more of a buried thought than something I ever consciously considered. Now I'm faced with the disturbing image of an ice cream with intestines, so I had to put the console down for a minute or twenty.
Pokemon Sun and Moon's Pokedex states that Vanilluxe, Vanillish's evolution, has two heads and two brains. Furthermore, it also states that if it loses one of its heads, it can still survive. Gruesome.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A Basically Confirms All 16 DLC Mega Evolutions
Pokemon Legends: Z-A's upcoming release saw dataminers retrieve information regarding 16 new Mega Evolutions in the game's DLC.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Weirdest Pokedex Entry is Already Clear
To further cement this feeling of being grossed out of the game is another random NPC asking how one is supposed to get rid of "Pokemon droppings," meaning excrement. So not only do I now know that one of my favorite Gen 5 Pokemon species has internal organs, but also that it supposedly passes food and the like through its body to expel it. Did I need to know this? No. No, I didn't. As a big fan of ice cream, I am not sure if I want one for the next few months.
To be fair, there were red flags already, as Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon stated that Vanillite, the first stage of the evolution line, is born when the sun hits an icicle that wishes not to melt. Also, Darumaka's Pokedex entry states that people use its excrement to keep themselves warm. Weird and dark Pokedex entries are nothing new, but this makes me ask all kinds of questions regarding the Pokemon universe, and I don't have a lot of answers.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A's New Mega Evolutions Are Officially Cursed
Yet, Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Pokedex is full of weird entries that make you rethink what you know about Pokemon. These are a few examples:
- Mega Clefable: "It flies by using the power of moonlight to control gravity within a radius of over 32 feet around it." So what happens when it's daytime? Does it lose the ability to fly? What happens if it's flying high in the sky when dawn breaks?
- Mega Chandelure: "One of its eyes is a window linking our world with the afterlife. This Pokémon draws in hatred and converts it into power." Pokemon Legends: Z-A casually confirms there is an afterlife where, presumably, both people and Pokemon go. This opens up a lot of possibilities for Ghost-type Pokemon, as they are sometimes defined as actual ghosts and others not.
- Mega Pyroar: "This Pokémon spews flames hotter than 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit. It swings around its grand, blazing mane as it protects its allies." It's worth noting that the surface of the sun is about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, so Mega Pyroar could melt virtually anything. The fact that this is also true for Magcargo makes me all the more uneasy, as rather than retconning this piece of information, the game is doubling down on it.
Honestly, I'm not sure how to feel about all this. Mega Pyroar is possibly my favorite new Mega Evolution in Pokemon Legends: Z-A alongside Mega Falinks, so I have to accept the fact that it could melt the planet, and that it most likely has intestines, poops, and does all sorts of other things. But you know, at least Pyroar is based on lions. I never thought I'd see the day when Pokemon would canonize Vannilite, Vanillish, and Vanillux having organs, but here we are.
Pokemon's History of Messed-Up Pokedex Entries Continues in Legends: Z-A
At the same time, what did I expect from a franchise that is supposedly for kids, and yet has horrifying Pokedex entries stating that Phantump is a stump possessed by spirits of dead children, Palossand has dried-up bones of its victims at the base of the sand castle, Drifloon and Hypno are kidnapping children, and Jigglypuff can't breathe while singing, thus endangering its own life. Sure, these are pretty dark facts, but I think there's something particularly gross about an ice cream with internal organs, and if it doesn't bother you, I don't know what to tell you.
