Why Totodile Should Be the Water Starter of Pokemon Legends…

Even though the starter trio for Pokemon Legends: Z-A has yet to be officially confirmed, Totodile might be the likeliest candidate for the game's Water-type starter Pokemon if fan theories and alleged leaks are to be believed. Thanks to its predecessor, Pokemon Legends: Arceus, and its inter-generational line-up of starter Pokemon, it seems that players are anticipating that Pokemon Legends: Z-A will take the same approach with its own starter trio. However, out of the eight remaining options for Legends: Z-A's Water-type starter Pokemon, Gen 2's Totodile has already been predicted to be Game Freak's yet-to-be-confirmed choice.

While Legends: Arceus has already featured Cyndaquil, another Gen 2 starter Pokemon, as part of its trio, this shouldn't mean that Totodile isn't out of the running for Legends: Z-A. In fact, there are already leaks and fan theories about Legends: Z-A's starter Pokemon suggesting that Totodile will join the likes of Turtwig, Litten, Snivy, and Torchic, though all these remain speculative without official confirmation. Yet, given how frequently Totodile keeps cropping up among these rumors, it seems that Pokemon players have already decided ahead of any Game Freak reveal which Water-type starter Pokemon they want to see in Legends: Z-A.

Some Leaks and Theories Claim Totodile is Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Water-type Starter Pokemon

Following the reveal of Legends: Z-A, a lot of leaks and fan theories since then have suggested that Totodile will be the game's Water-type starter Pokemon, ultimately lending credibility to the rumor despite no official word from Game Freak. These same leaks even suggested that Totodile would receive a new regional form and a Mega Evolution, details that line up with Legends: Arceus also featuring regional starter Pokemon and Legends: Z-A's trailer hinting that Mega Evolutions would return. However, a longtime Pokemon leaker teased that Legends: Z-A starters would feature Pokemon from Gens 3, 5, and 8, meaning Gen 2's Totodile would be out of the running.

Totodile Still Has Potential For Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Regardless of these rumors, Totodile would still be a worthwhile addition to Legends: Z-A or any other like-minded game as a starter Pokemon since Totodile combines a cutesy design with nostalgia for one of Pokemon's oldest generations. For instance, when the Fire-type starter Fuecoco was revealed for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, fans quickly compared it to Totodile due to their shared inspiration and child-like goofiness. With Totodile's design proving the test of time and being well-liked among fans, it would be a natural fit for a game like Legends: Z-A, which offers starter Pokemon from past generations a second chance in the spotlight.

But beyond this, Totodile would also be an ideal starter Pokemon to revamp in Legends: Z-A due to both its age and its sole Water type when fully evolved. Much like its fellow Gen 2 starter Pokemon Cyndaquil in Legends: Arceus, Totodile could greatly benefit from receiving a regional form or evolution with a new secondary type, bringing it into line with many other starter Pokemon in recent generations. In addition to potentially receiving a new Mega Evolution, some rumors have suggested that Totodile might gain a Steel-type when evolving into a potential regional Feraligatr in Legends: Z-A.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Lumiose City Could Inspire a New Totodile Line

Based on what little is known about the game's upcoming story and setting, it is unclear how exactly Totodile would be involved in Legends: Z-A's urban redevelopment of Lumiose City. As theorized with past starter trios, it is believed that Game Freak chooses its starter Pokemon inspired by the region or a specific theme, such as Pokemon Sword and Shield's starters taking inspiration from English music, sport, and film entertainment. Therefore, with the Totodile line inspired by crocodiles and alligators, perhaps Legends: Z-A might embrace its urban redevelopment plot with a regional Feraligatr based on urban legends of sewer alligators.
