Even though Pokemon Legends: Z-A just came out, a lot of the game's new features, Mega Evolutions, battle style, and even story details were leaked as early as last year. Most details were discovered just now when the game became available through early copies or via datamining, but some things were already clear, like the 26 new Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. These were all basically confirmed by Mega Dragonite's first appearance in July 2025, as it was among the leaked Megas and its description matched the leaked one to a T. Now, however, players can start building a team in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and they might want to consider Starmie.
Although Mega Starmie is possibly one of the most controversial Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A due to how little its design changes from the original, it is actually incredibly strong, and even stronger than most other Megas. While Mega Zygarde has an otherworldly Special Attack stat of 216, Pokemon Legends: Z-A puts a lot of emphasis on a different stat - Speed. With high Speed and an astounding BST of 660 that rivals that of pseudo-Legendary Pokemon or even that of some Legendaries, Mega Starmie is already the best Mega in the game. The reasons are as follows:
- Mega Starmie has one of the highest BST of new Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, with 660, whereas the next highest are Mega Dragonite's 700 and Mega Zygarde's 778.
- While Staryu is not among the Wild Zone 1 Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, it's still fairly early into the game, so players can use Starmie very soon.
- Pokemon Legends: Z-A's real-time battles favor Speed a lot due to its ability to recharge cooldowns faster and dodge more often, and Mega Starmie has 120 base Speed.
- Unlike most other Pokemon, Mega Starmie has +140 to its BST, whereas the norm is 100.
- Mega Starmie has access to multiple great offensive moves, and it's a powerful attacker.
You can get Alpha Staryu at night in Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Wild Zone 2, and it's level 31. You can then buy a Water Stone from Lumiose City's Stone Emporium for 3,000 Poke Gold to evolve Staryu into Starmie. Finally, you can get Starminite after beating Rogue Mega Starmie.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A Leak Reveals Mega Starmie
A new leak reveals the upcoming Mega Evolution of Starmie, one of the creatures confirmed to get a new form in Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
The Best New Pokemon Legends: Z-A Mega Evolution is Already Clear
The reason Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Mega Starmie gets a total of 660 BST compared to the original's 520 is that this critter normally has the Huge Power Ability. However, Pokemon Legends: Z-A cut Abilities, and to compensate, all critters with Huge Power instead get +40 Attack, with an example being Mega Mawile.

Considering its 120 Speed, 140 Attack, and 130 Special Attack, players can use Mega Starmie as a versatile attacker, using a mix of physical and special moves. To this end, Mega Starmie also gets multiple new physical moves that can deal massive damage, such as Aqua Jet, Liquidation, and Zen Headbutt, while also having Bulk Up to increase its offensive stats. On top of that, Mega Starmie has access to some of the best Pokemon moves for its types, like Psychic, Surf, Hydro Pump, and Water Pulse. Mega Starmie also has plenty of coverage moves, like:
- Power Gem (Rock - strong against Flying, Bug, Fire, and Ice)
- Ice Beam, Blizzard, Icy Wind (Ice - strong against Flying, Ground, Grass, and Dragon)
- Thunderbolt, Thunder Wave, Thunder (Electric - strong against Flying and Water)
- Flash Cannon (Steel - strong against Rock, Ice, and Fairy)
- Dazzling Gleam (Fairy - strong against Fighting, Dragon, and Dark)
Why Mega Starmie is Officially The Best New Mega in PLZA
What follows is that Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Mega Starmie can be an incredibly strong, speedy attacker that can even defeat Pokemon it's weak against. In fact, Starmie and Mega Starmie are both weak to Bug, Ghost, Grass, Electric, and Dark due to their Water/Psychic type combo, and the only type they can't cover against is Ghost.
How Mega Starmie Compares to Other Pokemon Legends: Z-A Mega Evolutions
As such, considering that players can get Mega Starmie fairly quickly, it has great moves and coverage, it has some of the highest stats in the game, and it can recharge its cooldowns very fast, this is the single best Mega Evolution in the game. It may be topped by late-game additions, such as Pokemon Legends: Z-A's Mega Zygarde, but it's going to take a long time to do that.
Even some of the existing Mega Evolutions can't really beat the sheer power of Mega Starmie's Attack, Special Attack, and Speed when combined with incredible move coverage. If anything, the only thing that may pull Mega Starmie back is that it has fairly low HP and only four move slots, so choosing which moves to pick is going to be more crucial than ever.
