The winter holidays are here and Pokemon GO trainers have a ton of exciting opportunities to keep themselves busy in the coming weeks. Before the Holidays event officially kicks off, trainers are already able to head out and enjoy the first Mega Raids available during December 2021.

To start off the month, Pokemon GO players will find Mega Steelix available in the Mega Raid slot. Along with the current appearances of Zekrom and Reshiram in the Legendary Battle Raid slot, this makes yet another tempting boss for raiders to meet in battle. The Mega Boss will be available until December 23, so there’s still time to prepare a strong roster and head out into the fight.

Trainers should keep in mind that Meta Steelix is a Steel and Ground-type Pokemon. That opens up some very nice opportunities for a wide range of effective counters. The best rosters will focus on Fire-, Fighting-, Water-, and Ground-type counters to take advantage of the big boss’ weaknesses…

Best Mega Steelix Counters (December 2021)

  • Charizard (Mega Y) - Fire Spin/Blast Burn
  • Blastoise (Mega) - Water Gun/Hydro Cannon
  • Gyarados (Mega) - Waterfall/Hydro Pump
  • Charizard (Mega X) - Fire Spin/Blast Burn
  • Houndoom (Mega) - Fire Fang/Flamethrower
  • Lopunny (Mega) - Low Kick/Focus Blast
  • Gengar (Mega) - Shadow Claw/Focus Blast
  • Reshiram - Fire Fang/Overheat
  • Lucario - Counter/Aura Sphere
  • Conkeldurr - Counter/Dynamic Punch
  • Kyogre - Waterfall/Surf

As always, trainers can definitely get through the battle without this ideal counter roster, as long as they still prepare carefully. Take advantage of the appropriate counter types and enter the battle with a minimum of five other players for the best odds of survival and the opportunity to take down the boss and start racking up some of that crucial Mega Candy.

The community should learn much more about exact details throughout the early days of the Season of Heritage. Be sure to check back in the near future for more Pokemon GO strategy guides, news, and updates. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!
