When Pokemon GO came out in 2016 on iOS and Android, it quickly became a worldwide sensation. The game spawned countless imitators in the years to come, most of which didn't come remotely close to the level of popularity that it had at launch. Although Pokemon GO is in a league of its own in the augmented reality gaming space, it has still taken some inspiration from conventional live-service titles, like Fortnite. Since December 2020, Niantic has been releasing seasonal updates for Pokemon GO, which operate similarly to other GAAS titles. They feature new events, Pokemon debuts, and other types of content that all follow a specific theme.
The eighteenth and most recent season of Pokemon GO, titled Might and Mastery, began on March 4, 2025, and is scheduled to end on June 3. This update is primarily themed around two Legendary Pokemon: Kubfu and its evolved form, Urshifu. The first event that aired in Pokemon GO as part of the Might and Mastery season came out in March 2025, and it introduced Kubfu to the game, along with some other major new features. Now, more than two months later, Urshifu is finally ready to join Kubfu's party in Pokemon GO.

Pokemon Go Fans Will Have the Ability to Evolve Their Kubfus into Two Different Types of Urshifus
Urshifu, for those who don't already know, is a Fighting-type Pokemon that was introduced in the Pokemon Sword and Shield games as part of their Island of Armor expansion. It is one of the few Legendary Pokemon with an evolutionary line, and it's also the only Legendary Pokemon that has a Gigantamax form. Unlike its Kubfu predecessor, Urshifu has two distinct special forms: the Single Strike Style and the Rapid Strike Style. The SSS form turns Urshifu into a Fighting/Dark dual-type Pokemon, while the RSS one turns it into a Fighting/Water type.
Normally, in the mainline Pokemon games, players need to get certain items known as the Scroll of Darkness and Scroll of Water in order to make Urshifu evolve into the form that they desire. However, in Pokemon GO, Urshifu's evolution process isn't going to work this way. After Urshifu is added to the game on May 21, players will have to obtain 200 Kubfu Candy and defeat 30 Dark-type or Water-type Pokemon with Kubfu in their party. Depending on the types of Pokemon they beat, Kubfu will evolve into either a Single Strike Style Urshifu or a Rapid Strike Style Urshifu.
Kubfu and Urshifu's Seasonal Special Research Story will be available for free to all players until the end of the Might and Mastery update on June 3.
The May 21 Event for Pokemon GO Will Feature a Lot of New Content, Aside from Urshifu
On the same day that Urshifu gets added to Pokemon GO, the game's developer, Niantic, plans to release a major content update for the game that includes a bunch of new, temporary features. During the event, for example, players will be able to obtain event bonuses for winning Raid Battles, which they can receive additional passes for by completing Timed Research tasks. From May 21 to May 27, meanwhile, the encounter rates of certain Pokemon will be increased. Players who want Pokemon like Mankey, Carvanha, Seel, and Galarian Zigzagoon can go outside and catch them during this period.
In addition to all this, Niantic is going to add new Timed Research opportunities (both paid and free) to the game on May 21, which players can complete to obtain Kubfu Candies, Eggs, battle passes, and Pokemon GO's Rare Candies, alongside some other rewards. Niantic will also release two new avatar items based on Urshifu's forms, as well as a paid Fuzzy Fighter Special Research event that Pokemon GO players can purchase to encounter Dynamax Kubfu again, if they weren't able to do so before.
