Weekly Challenges are social events that trainers join up to complete. You can form a team with three Pokemon GO Friends to join and complete a Weekly Challenge. Since it is a Weekly Challenge, you and your fellow trainers can partake in one every week.
You do not have to be in the same location as your in-game Friends; even remote players can join the group, which makes it a special update.
