Pokemon GO is all set to feature Poliwag in its Spotlight Hour event for March 2024, and fans are quite curious to learn more about how they can get the shiny variant of the Pokemon and its evolutions.
Poliwag is a Water-type Pokemon hailing from the Kanto region in Generation 1. It is considered one of the best Water-type Pokemon because of the type matchup of its evolution, featuring a rare combination of Water and Fighting that is quite effective against a variety of types. Not to mention, it is one of those very few Pokemon that has two evolution lines, depending on the items players use to evolve it. For players looking for a shiny Poliwag in Pokemon GO, here is what they need to know.
Pokemon GO: How to Get Shiny Vulpix
Pokemon GO is featuring Vulpix in its upcoming Spotlight Hour event, and here is how to get the shiny variant of it and its evolution, Ninetales.
Can Poliwag Be Shiny In Pokemon GO?
Yes, Poliwag and all of its evolutions can be shiny in Pokemon GO. When it comes to differentiating between regular and shiny variants of Poliwag and Poliwhirl, that can be a bit tricky as they have pretty much the same color, with the shiny version being a few shades lighter. However, for Poliwrath and Politoed, the differences are much more pronounced. In these cases, instead of Poliwrath being blue and Politoed being green, the colors are swapped. So, shiny variants of Poliwrath and Politoed are green and blue in color, respectively. Another way to know if a Pokemon is shiny is by checking the symbol near its CP, which is only present in shiny variants.
How To Get Shiny Poliwag in Pokemon GO
To get a shiny Poliwag, players will need to hunt for it in the wild. While it was previously available as part of 1-Star Raids, the current rotation doesn't feature it. Poliwag is found a lot near bodies of water, which can include anything from beaches to lakes and canals. Since this is just a regular Pokemon, the odds remain to be 1/512, which means that players will need to catch quite a few Poliwag before they encounter a shiny one, unless they are extremely lucky.
A good way to improve your chances is by taking part in the Spotlight Hour event. Although the shiny rates aren't boosted, the increased spawn rate means players have a better-than-usual chance of catching a shiny Poliwag. It should be noted that, while the shiny odds might look quite intimidating, it doesn't necessarily imply that players will have to encounter 500 Poliwag to get a shiny one. This is because the odds reset on every encounter, so players could hypothetically get one on their first attempt as well.
Since encountering as many Poliwag as possible is the best way to get a shiny one, players should also make the most of the event by using Lure Modules and Incense. In particular, players should also try to use specific Lure Modules, Glacial and Rainy in this case, since it specifically boost the spawn of Water-type Pokemon, among others. On top of that, Poliwag is also weather-boosted by Rainy weather, so players will find it more often in the wild in such conditions.
How To Get Shiny Poliwhirl, Poliwrath & Politoed
Once players have a shiny Poliwag, all they need to do is use candies to get Poliwhirl, Poliwrath, and Politoed. Players will need 25 Poliwag candies to evolve from Poliwag to Poliwhirl, and 100 candies for the next evolution. If players simply use candies, then Poliwhirl evolves into Poliwrath, but when used along with King's Rock, players get Politoed instead. Players can buy King's Rock from the shop, or try their luck and hope that spinning a PokeStop awards them with it, although the probability of the latter happening is extremely slim.
