Pokemon GO will be introducing Gigantamax Butterfree to the game as the centerpiece of an upcoming Max Battle Day. Scheduled for August 3, the special event in Pokemon GO will give players the chance to catch a powerful new Pokemon, and some impressive limited-time bonuses will help them along in their quest.
Max Battles were first added to Pokemon GO in autumn 2024, allowing players to add Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokemon to their collections. Nearly 70 different Pokemon in the game are currently capable of Dynamax transformations, which turn them into much larger versions of themselves. However, only a dozen so far can perform Gigantamax transformations, drastically altering their appearances aside from just increasing their size and power.

As detailed by Pokemon GO's developer, the upcoming event will be the first time that players will be able to capture a Gigantamax Butterfree in the mobile augmented reality game. During the event, every single Power Spot in the game will play host to Max Battles, and their refresh rates will be much quicker, giving players an easier chance of finding a Gigantamax Butterfree to claim. Doing so won't be easy, though, as each Gigantamax Butterfree will appear in a six-star Max Battle, so players may want to make sure they've got powerful Dynamax or Gigantamax allies who can help them against a strong Bug/Flying-type Pokemon, such as a Rock, Flying, Fire, Electric, or Ice-Type Pokemon.

Following the usual trend of Max Battle Days, players will be helped along by a number of different bonuses during the event period. Max Particle limits in Pokemon GO will be relaxed, allowing each player to carry around a total of 1,600 at a time, and Power Spots will be boosted significantly in the Max Particle distribution department, dispensing eight times their normal amount. Starting 14 hours before the event, players will accumulate double Max Patricles from exploring, and the adventuring distance required to receive them will be slashed to 25 percent of their normal amount. Additionally, daily Remote Raid Pass Limits will be relaxed starting at 5 p.m. On August 2, letting each player carry up to 20.
In the lead-up to the event, players can also catch a Dynamax Darumaka in Pokemon GO by completing timed research tasks that are scheduled to begin on July 28. Both the special upcoming Butterfree and Darumaka have a chance of being shiny, so shiny hunters have something special to look forward to. And along with the regular timed research, players who purchase an event ticket for $4.99 can look forward to even bigger Max Particle collection limits and double experience from Max Battles during the three-hour event, in addition to a Max Mushroom and 25,000 XP.
