Upcoming Pokemon GO Event Adding Gen 8 Pokemon

Pokemon GO announces the Powerful Potential event for March that marks the debut of a Gen 8 critter as Season 18's first new Pokemon.

The next creature to follow suit may be Magearna, one of the roughly 30 Mythicals that are still missing from Pokemon GO as of early 2025. That's suggested by what appears to be the official Pokemon GO Fest 2025 logo that recently emerged on the r/TheSilphRoad subreddit. The graphic features four gear patterns, which many fans interpret as not-so-subtle hints that the upcoming event will introduce Magearna, a Gen 7 Pokemon with a gear-shaped head and a gear-inspired name. The shiny variant of Magearna is partially golden, and while the gears in the Pokemon GO Fest 2025 logo use a similar color, the shades don’t match.

Pokemon GO Fest 2025 was announced on January 6, with Niantic confirming three host cities. The event will first take place in Osaka between May 29 and June 1, then move to New Jersey from June 6 to June 8. The tour will conclude with a Paris event that will run from June 13 through June 15. That's the full extent of what Niantic has shared so far, with the developer promising that more information about the event will follow closer to its start.

Launching Magearna during Pokemon GO Fest 2025 would be in line with Niantic's track record of using the game's biggest event of the year to introduce new pocket monsters. The 2024 iteration of GO Fest debuted several new Pokemon, including Generation 7 Mythical Marshadow. No shiny variant of Marshadow was released at the time or since then, so it's possible that a similar limited release is also on the cards for Magearna.

Magearna could potentially be highly desirable in competitive play, not least because its Steel/Fairy typing is widely considered to be one of the strongest dual-types in the entire Pokemon franchise. Steel/Fairy creatures like Tinkaton and Zacian are effective against six types of Pokemon and immune to two, while resisting nine others. As such, they offer an exceptional balance of offensive and defensive advantages that's desirable in any meta not dominated by Fire and Ground types.
