Summary

  • Pokemon Gen 10 may be set in Greece, offering potential for new critters inspired by Greek mythology.
  • Shiny Ditto could transform into the shiny version of its opponent, but it currently doesn't in battles.
  • It's uncertain whether Pokemon Gen 10 will address the shiny Ditto issue, considering past game performance.

Not much is currently known about Pokemon Gen 10 games, if anything, at least officially. There have been several leaks and rumors to date, starting with the infamous TeraLeak of last year, which included mentions of Gen 10 as "project Gaia," a codename possibly tied to the games' rumored setting. Pokemon Gen 10 leaks confirm Greece as its setting, which makes sense when considering Gaia, as it can refer to either the goddess of the Earth or the cradle of civilization, typically used to describe Greece. Regardless of its setting, however, one Pokemon is most likely to return in Gen 10, but it should finally address one longtime issue.

If Gen 10 is set in Greece, it seems plausible that there will be new critters, evolutions, or forms inspired by Greek mythology, possibly even including its box Legendary Pokemon. There's a lot of potential for great designs in this regard, and that can be further enhanced by carefully selected shiny palettes for each critter. Since shiny Pokemon remain one of the most popular features in each game, it's a no-brainer that they will return, and Ditto alongside them to favor breeding. In this case, Pokemon Gen 10 can't miss the mark once again with shiny Ditto's transformations.

This guide lists all the Pokemon GO Ditto disguises in May 2025 and how to get Shiny Ditto during the month.

Pokemon Gen 10 Should Break an Unfortunate Tradition For Shiny Ditto

While Pokemon double battles, the official format for the VGC, normally don't see a lot of usage for Ditto due to how it can fall short in competitive, it's still a very popular Pokemon overall. Sometimes, it can be worth using it in Raids in Pokemon GO, or even to take down Tera Raid bosses in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. No matter the reason, there's always room for Ditto to be used in battle, and something fans have wanted for years is to see a shiny Ditto transform into the shiny version of its opponent.

This is very much not the case at the moment, unless a shiny Ditto is used against a shiny Pokemon, in which case, the transformation will be shiny as well in some games. However, the general rule of thumb is that shiny Ditto doesn't retain its shiny property when transforming. This is likely because Ditto copies the opposing Pokemon's appearance and its moves, so if the opposing Pokemon is not shiny when Transform is used, Ditto won't be either. It's a shame because shiny Ditto is incredibly popular, and it would be a nice touch for it to become the shiny version of the opposing Pokemon in battle.

There may not be much to gain or lose from the addition of this feature or the lack thereof, but it would make shiny Ditto feel more special in actual gameplay. For example, when hunting shinies in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, shiny Ditto will appear as another critter in the overworld, but it won't be the shiny version of that Pokemon. In Gen 9, this makes Ditto hard to find as a shiny, but it also highlights how the games lack a way for shiny Ditto to become the shiny equivalent of its opponents.

Why Pokemon Gen 10 and Legends: Z-A May Not Give Shiny Ditto its Due

After the performance issues in Gen 9 games, Gen 10 will have a lot to live up to, and it's important that it gets its priorities right. As such, there is very little guarantee that the next set of mainline games will change this particular behavior for a single Pokemon, especially when it may also be more complex than it seems to emulate the opponent's shiny color palette upon transforming. It remains to be seen whether the series will finally make this step forward, and if not, it would be equally unlikely for Pokemon Legends: Z-A's leaked roster to also include Ditto and shiny versions of every critter in the game, including Mega Evolutions.
