Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen might be based on the first ever released Pokemon games, but they have a few differences to consider. Its type-chart, for example, is not the same as in the original games. With a few of the gimmicks included in Gen 2 and Gen 3 games, this early remake of the classic Red/Blue/Yellow/ Green games is an absolute treat for those who love its retro style.

If players are starting a new Pokemon Journey, and need to study the type interactions, their effectiveness, weaknesses, and even how they are considered in terms of Special Attack or Physical Attack, then they have come to the right place. This guide has everything you need to become a true Pokemon Master.

Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen Type Chart

The main types in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen are the classic ones (from Gen 1): Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, plus added Dark and Steel (from Gen 2).

Typing in Gen 1 games is associated with Special Damage or Physical Damage, so there are two big groups of damage type-based:

  • Physical Damage (use Atk to calculate damage): Normal, Fighting, Rock, Ground, Steel, Flying, Ghost, Bug, Poison
  • Special Damage (use Sp. Atk. To calculate damage): Fire, Grass, Water, Electric, Ice, Psychic, Dragon, Dark

As for the interactions between the types, here's a full type-chart to calculate damage based on some simple premises: ½ (Half Damage), 2 (Super Effective), 0 (Doesn't Affect). On the Left column, players will find the attackers, on the top row, their corresponding interactions with Defenders, and how much damage they will cause.

Which Pokemon Types Are Not Available in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen?

A Type-chart for Pokemon LeafGreen/FIre Red

As players might have already noticed, not all Pokemon-types are available in FireRed & LeafGreen games, which are considered Gen III, as they have all types and gimmicks included with Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.

Most of the types in FireRed & LeafGreen are available, with the sole exception of the Fairy-type. For example, Clefairy, Jigglypuff, and their evolutions are still of the Normal-type.

However, there are moves of the Steel & Dark types, and even some Pokemon from Gen 2 and 3 included in the games. So, Murkrow, Skarmory, and Scizor are good examples of this. Although they can only be caught when acquiring the National Pokedex in the post-game.
