Despite its relatively limited moveset in early levels, Abra is one of the trickiest Pokemon to catch in FireRed and LeafGreen. Thanks to its only move being Teleport, which allows it to escape battles and high Speed stat, trying to catch one in the wild often requires you to simply throw a Poke Ball at it and hope for the best. Fortunately, there is an easier way to get Abra in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen if you're willing to wait and try your luck. Here's what you need to know to catch this Psychic-type creature, and how to evolve it into Kadabra and then into Alakazam.

How to Get Abra in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

Abra can be found on Route 24 and Route 25, which are both directly north of Cerulean City. This means you can find Abra in the wild relatively early on in your adventure across Kanto, but there is a slight catch.

As noted above, Abra can be very difficult to catch. Teleport is the only move it'll know and allows the Pokemon to escape from battle once you encounter it. Due to its high Speed stat, Abra also has a good chance of going first, making it difficult to get an attack in to weaken it before it disappears.

With that in mind, your best bet of catching an Abra in the wild is to use a Great Ball or Ultra Ball. This might seem like overkill, but given Abra's relatively low level in the wild, this should be more than enough to catch one at full health before it has a chance to use Teleport.

Alternatively, if you go to Celadon City and enter the Game Corner, you can purchase a level 9 Abra in FireRed for 180 coins, and a level 7 Abra in LeafGreen for 120 coins. These coins must be won on the slot machines in the Game Corner itself.

Abra can be evolved into Kadabra by training it up to level 16. Once it reaches level 16, the evolution animation should begin after a battle. The trouble here is that Abra will only ever learn Teleport through leveling. As such, you'll need to either teach it new moves via TMs, or to put it in the first position in your party so that it starts a fight, and immediately withdraw it for another Pokemon so that they share the EXP earned from defeating the opposing Pokemon.

To evolve Kadabra into Alakazam, you'll need to trade it. To do this, go to a Pokemon Center and go upstairs to the second floor. Now go to the Direct Corner and select the Trade Center option, where you can trade Pokemon with a friend over local wireless.

There is no online trading in the Nintendo Switch versions of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. As such, you'll need to meet up with a friend who has a version of the game.

Trade your Kadabra to a friend and have them trade it back to you. I'd recommend having your friend also trading a Pokemon that needs to be traded to evolve, such as Haunter or Graveler, to make it worth both of your time. You'll also both tick the evolving Pokemon off your Pokedex!
