  • A talented Pokemon fan artist creates a unique Dark-type variant for Snorlax from a fictional region known as Mwanzo.
  • The variant has a special ability called Survival Instinct, which increases Attack and Speed by 1/3.
  • Snorlax is popular in fan art with past designs including Electric/Fighting and future Paradox forms.

A talented Pokemon fan artist has recently devised a new regional variant for Snorlax, reimagining the popular critter with a fairly distinct design. Originally introduced in Pokemon Sun and Moon, the regional variants were an interesting addition to the Pokemon franchise, and have been inspiring fans to design new takes on well-known creatures since then.

Snorlax is a Normal-type creature originally introduced in Pokemon Red and Blue. Apart from being one of the heaviest critters in the entire franchise, this Pokemon is well known for its habit of sleeping in the middle of roads, and can only be fought and captured or removed by using a Poke Flute in Gen 1 games. Snorlax eventually gained a pre-evolution called Munchlax, and it has a Gigantamax form, but the monster never received an official regional variant in the games.

Now, a Pokemon fan called Significant-Engine49 created a regional variant for Snorlax, which is said to come from a fictional region not present in the games named Mwanzo. This Dark-type take on Snorlax essentially resembles a skinny version of the monster with darker fur and sharper claws. According to its creator, this unique version of Snorlax is extremely dangerous when hungry and has a special ability called Survival Instinct, which increases its Attack and Speed values by 1/3, but makes its attacks random. The concept was adored by fans, who gave over 1,900 upvotes to Significant-Engine49’s artwork.

Pokemon Fan's Regional Variant of Snorlax

Due to its popularity and cuteness, Snorlax is often depicted in fan art. Last year, for example, one fan devised an Electric/Fighting-type variant for Snorlax, creating a yellow monster with a huge hammer that resembled the Norse god Thor.

Another interesting design shared by a fan was a future Paradox form for Snorlax. In this unique artwork, the Normal-type creature is depicted as a huge robotic creature that has a gigantic TV screen on its belly, which surprised the community due to its uncommon design.

Snorlax is far from the only critter that fan artists have given an unofficial regional variant, however. A few months ago, for example, one fan created a regional variant of Octillery, which was a Water/Steel-type creature that still resembled an octopus, but had yellow spikes on its body and what seemed like some metal parts. Hopefully, the community will continue to come up with incredibly creative designs for popular monsters like Snorlax, sharing them with other fans to celebrate the franchise.
