A Pokemon fan has redesigned Dragonite, imagining the Dragon and Flying-type pocket monster as Spyro the Dragon. It is not unusual for Pokemon fans to reimagine their favorite creatures based on popular characters from other media franchises. However, this particular Spyro the Dragon crossover art might be one of the most fitting based on the characters’ dragon appearances.
First seen in 1998’s Spyro the Dragon, the titular dragon of the platforming series has appeared in an extensive lineup of games. The character became associated with the PlayStation brand, appearing exclusively on Sony consoles for the first few years of its existence before eventually expanding to Nintendo and beyond. While Spyro has been a part of several crossovers over the years, such as Crash Bandicoot racing games, he has never appeared in the Pokemon series. However, one artistic gamer decided to change that by transferring his design to another iconic dragon-like character.
Best Games To Play If You Love Spyro The Dragon
Spyro the Dragon has arguably never been more popular, and with Crash getting a fourth mainline entry, fans are itching for a game like Spyro.
In a post on Reddit, HoundoomKaboom shared a picture of Dragonite reimagined as Spyro. While the artist elected to have the Pokemon be bipedal instead of walking on all fours like Spyro, they copied many elements of the purple dragon’s iconic design. Some of the most obvious Spyro influences were the purple and gold color scheme. However, the 2D Dragonite redesign went beyond a color swap, as the artist gave the Pokemon golden horns and spikes. They even added the gold point to the end of its tale.
It is worth pointing out that HoundoomKaboom is a prolific artist known for their varied and impressive Pokemon fan art. For example, they have made a variety of Pokemon fusions over the years, combining pocket monsters like Gengar and Spiritomb. In addition, HoundoomKaboom is no stranger to working with Dragonite as some of their previous fusions have used the Dragon/Flying-type Pokemon as a subject.
Spyro Fans Are Still Waiting for a New Game
In addition to the plethora of Pokemon fan art made by talented artists, Spyro has seen many fan tributes. From artwork reimagining Spyro as a Disney character to real-life models of in-game characters, the creativity of the community is often on display. A significant reason for this outpouring of art stems from fans hoping for a new installment in the franchise.
While the first three games in the Spyro the Dragon series received remakes as part of the Reignited Trilogy in 2018, the last new mainline game was The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon in 2008. With many fans clamoring for a new installment in the franchise, several rumors have circulated in recent months, teasing the character’s return. However, nothing official has materialized so far. In addition, it was recently revealed that Toys for Bob, the developer of more recent Spyro and Crash Bandicoot projects, had gone independent, meaning that one of the popular choices to helm a new game featuring the purple dragon might not happen. However, while the future of the Spyro series remains uncertain, gamers like HoundoomKaboom will likely continue to make fan art paying tribute to Spyro in the meantime.
