A childhood argument ultimately led to one Pokemon fan receiving a rare, unopened copy of Pokemon Crystal about 24 years after it initially hit stores. There are many rare Pokemon collectibles out there, from limited-edition Pokemon cards to special Pokemon-themed merchandise from the franchise’s initial boom period of the late 90s and early 2000s. Just like the legendary Pokemon that trainers search the globe for, many Pokemon fans have unearthed these valuable treasures within their attics or garages, often discovering that they are worth large amounts of money in the process.

One such collectible is Pokemon Crystal, the 2001 rerelease of Pokemon Gold and Silver for the Game Boy Color. Like Pokemon Yellow before it, Pokemon Crystal updated the previous games with new graphical and gameplay improvements, such as animated Pokemon sprites, additional story content involving the legendary Pokemon Suicune, and the choice to play as a female Pokemon trainer for the first time in the series. These changes caused many fans to look back at Pokemon Crystal fondly, with some even uncovering their copies of the game in the most unlikely of places.

Pokemon Fan Finds Unopened Copy of Crystal 24 Years Later

One such story comes from Facebook user Ash Taraqi, who recently shared a photo of their unopened copy of Pokemon Crystal still wrapped in plastic. They revealed that as a child, they and their brother were about to get Pokemon Crystal as a gift from their father, only for the children to get into a fight during the car ride home. As punishment, the dad took the game away, and everyone had forgotten about it until he found it while cleaning out his closet.

Other Facebook users have expressed amazement after reading the story of Ash Taraqi’s near-mint copy of Pokemon Crystal, with many telling them to get it graded to see how much it is worth in 2025. One comment in particular noted that something similar happened to them as a child, and mused that there could be numerous Pokemon and Legend of Zelda games hidden around their childhood house.

Ash Taraqi could have a small fortune on their hands with Pokemon Crystal, as mint copies of the game tend to be worth a couple of thousand dollars online. Even if they choose to keep the game, they still have an impressive relic of Pokemon’s heyday to show off to their friends, provided that they don't give in to the temptation to rip it open and make up for the lost time after their father took it away so many years ago.
