Summary
- Octopath Traveler and its sequel are now available on PlayStation and Xbox platforms, offering fans a chance to experience both JRPGs.
- Xbox Game Pass subscribers can enjoy both Octopath Traveler games until January 2026, making it easier for them to access these titles.
- Square Enix surprised many by shadow dropping the games onto storefronts, providing an unexpected opportunity for fans to enjoy these acclaimed titles.
Square Enix has surprisingly shadow dropped two of its hit JRPGs onto the PlayStation and Xbox platforms, Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2. The original Octopath Traveler first launched as a timed Nintendo Switch console exclusive in 2018, before it got ported to the PC later that same year. The game would later get ported to the now-defunct Google Stadia in 2020, and then to the Xbox One in 2021. A sequel, Octopath Traveler 2, was launched in 2023, releasing on the Switch, PlayStation consoles, and PC.
Notably, the first Octopath Traveler was absent from releasing on PlayStation consoles for roughly six years, even when the sequel was launched on said platform. In the same vein, the sequel wasn't brought over to Xbox consoles, making for a slightly lopsided library for some JRPG fans with either console. Fans, however, can finally get both Octopath Traveler games across every modern platform, including PlayStation and Xbox, thanks to a surprise shadow drop on both storefronts.
Rumor: Square Enix and Bravely Default Developers Working on a Sequel
According to a notable leaker, Square Enix and Team Asano, the developers of JRPGs like Bravely Default, are working on a sequel to one of its titles.
This release comes hot off the heels of a leak that rated Octopath Traveler for PlayStation, stating that it would release on PS4 and PS5. Eagle-eyed fans then saw Octopath Traveler having just launched on the PlayStation store, followed by an additional option to buy both games in a bundle. Fans can now purchase the first Octopath Traveler separately for $59.99 USD, or both games in a bundle for $74.99 USD. PS+ Members, however, can get the game at a discounted price of $39.59.
Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2 now on PlayStation & Xbox Consoles
- Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2 will remain on Game Pass until January 2026
Meanwhile, Octopath Traveler 2 has just launched on the Xbox/PC Store, also priced at $59.99 as a separate purchase. The Xbox Game Pass debut of Octopath Traveler 2 was leaked earlier this month, following a report of a number of games that would be added to the subscription service. Regardless, current subscribers of Xbox Game Pass can play this game for free. On top of that, the first Octopath Traveler has also been re-added to the Xbox Game Pass, after it was previously removed in February 2023. Both of these games on Game Pass means that Xbox and PC gamers can get easy access to both of these JRPGs if they have a subscription, and will remain on the service until January 2026.
Many were surprised at Square Enix shadow dropping both of these versions so eagerly, as Summer Game Fest is still only a few days away, and the event would have been a more likely time to show off the Xbox version of Octopath Traveler 2. Accompanying these ports was a free update for the Steam version, which added a new Extra Battles mode after completing the story of Octopath Traveler 2. An Octopath Traveler bundle was also made available for purchase on Steam.
